just wondering what methods people use.... if any to get there snare or clap right,
lately i have been using two together eqing the low out on one and then whatever on the next to make it sound alright,
i notice that some artist's tend to eq all the lows,to get more of a high piched slap while others have the full bodied rock snare thing going on,one thing that i have really noticed lately that new artist dont seem to be able to pull of the sound the established artist manage to create, whats up with this, i mean there is only so much u can do with a snare/clap right?
anyway look forward to people's comments!! |

I think part of the reason is that established artists have had time to accumulate good samples. But more importantly, they learn to recognise the sound they want and spend more time getting the right sounds at the beginning of a track. They don't put anything in that doesn't sound right thus saving alot of time on EQ and stuff like that later on.

yeah i totally agree!!so many varients involved....there is no one answer,i should have made my question simpler!!
do u generally kut bottoms or leave them reasonably intact...
the reason i ask,is that when u leave the snare intack a lot of the freq range is used up from it,if ya no what i mean... |

u can make 'dents' in the frequency range on harmonic places, so the other tracks can come through those 'dents'.
the best trick i ever learned for snares/claps was to use a gated reverb... Incredible what that can do to a snare. And also multiband compression... I always have those 2 things on my snares/claps, and i make sure they sound as perfect as possible to start with....
Also, i never use synthesized snares/claps, they never sound right... |

each sample should get his own eq according to the basic sound.. but lets try anyways
to get "snare drum" as in drum set u need to peak 1000 hz and cut around 150hz
to get "electro snare" the peak is much higher around 5000hz-6000hz and cut 250hz or higher even..
waves req4 is perfect
i like also to use grm bandpass filter for snare/loop

How the best way to do this "gated reverb" on snare?
1. Send snare to fx track with reverb and gate then mixing the dry and wet signal (snare and fx)
or
2. Insert a reverb with the gating section (like Smarteletronix Ambiemce) in a snare channel.
can someone explain it or another technique known to do this "gated reverb" on snare.
thanks!

way number 1 is great
add send fx , chain reverb and gate after it.

This isn't a one shot fix for your problem, but I learned a lot about picking and placing snares by making snares out of white noise from a synth.
Using enveloped white noise you can experiement with how different lengths, frequency ranges and clashing frequencies all effect the finished outcome.
I also used to use white noise for snares in many of my tracks because I found it was a lot easier to get a sound more suiting to what I already had this way, rather than trying to butcher a perfectly good snare that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time... all because of me and my ways |
