Ok so I got a edirol fa-66 and a mid spec pc (c2d@3.2 and 4gb ram)but am struggling with maxing out my asio usage in cubase 4. Its peaking with only 5 virtual instruments and around 10 plugins. I set the audio drivers to max which made a little difference but not enough for what I want. I really need 10 virtual instruments and around 20 plugins playing at once to be able to create in a organic fashion. What options do I have for improving the performance?

is buying a new cpu (quad core) going to make a difference?
is changing asio settings going to help?
am I just asking too much, and need to bounce more?
ps. im a beginner so any ideas are good for me!

I had those issues as well. It has to do with the audio drivers your using in the first place. First thing I had to do, is to completely back out (uninstall) all ASIO audio drivers and software (cubase) that utilize those drivers. Install these audio drivers;

then reinstall everything else back in order. It also helps if you use a desktop that has no background services running like anti virus, spyware, etc.

You might not have to uninstall everything, but this is what worked for me, and took months to figure out, and what I had to do.
Of course upgrading your CPU and RAM will help significantly. But either way, the KX audio drivers are great to use, although you will seriously need to RTFM to set them up properly. hint... make sure the "AC97" record input is muted if your not using it, and if it sounds like your getting internal feedback, switch the "stereo mix" to Line in" or else it's bouncing any internal audio, back in. (for Ableton live)

Hope this helps and good luck!

I'm still using a single-core AMD XP3200+ with 1GB RAM and I get better performance than this... make sure your system's processor scheduling is set up so that background services have priority:
