stand up to VST effects?

they seem to hold up pretty well, but then, i don't have years of ears built up.

anyone? is it worth it to invest in some good effects or just roll with lives? they're good enough for me thus far.

Grain delay is my best friend

Everything is personal preference, but Ableton has really good built in effects.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

If you say they are good enough I think you answered your own question already. Just download some of the testversions from other vst's your are interested in and see how they compare with abletons.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

The synths and delays are great, and the overdrive and reverb are pretty good but I'm not a fan of EQ8.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Yes, it would be better if it had an overlay of the actual spectrum on the graph. Are there any other reasons you don't like it?

I guess I could add something by saying what other vsts I use instead of Ableton's.

FabFilter Volcano (filter)- although I use Ableton's auto filter as well.
CamelPhat (distortion) - overdrive and amp are decent, but not as adjustable as this
Sonalksis EQ (since it has a spectrum on the eq)
I don't normally use Ableton's Vocoder, but I don't use Vocoders that much in general.

I think Ableton's delays are really nice, I use all of them. Phaser and flanger get the job done for me as well. I use some other vsts for these on occasion, but Ableton's are quite good imo.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

It's quite possible that I haven't yet explored properly how to get the best out of it, but from what I've seen so far, the filters don't. Open to correction from someone with more info though.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

i'll agree that the EQ isn't all that, it definitely gets the job done, but doesn't feel as clean as it can get.

i bemoan the overdrive on a near daily basis, but haven't found any decent freeware distortion....

going to have to check out this spectrum overlay on EQ and filters, sounds uber handy.

Here's a good free distortion plugin (it's a stripped down version of camelphat):
