I want to find out how to sidechain the standard compressor in Cubase SX3.
I want to, for example, be able to set it so that everytime the kick is playing, it compresses the bass. Is that possible? I've seen it done in Logic before. If it isn't possible with the standard Cubase compressor, can you suggest any Direct X compressor plugin that I could use to do it with?
Thanks |

Yes, actually, I have tried the search function... but when the topic is called "Kick Questions" I don't imediately think of sidechain compression. Sorry if I'm a bit slow.
Thanks Colin |

didn't and still don't want to sound arrogant but there's like 10+ returns in search for sidechain. I once found a tutorial for c1-sc with nice screenshots but I can't provide the link anymore.
I'd recommend you to use this plugin, as it was the best in several tests I've performed. A bit tricky to set up at first but average in cpu consumption and best in quality. Beware most of the plugins I stated aren't true stereo sidechaining compressors. There are stereo ones available. Try www.kvr.com. For bassline ducking with sidechain I'd still recommend waves c1-sc.
If I remember correctly, a plugin called compadre should do true stereo sidechain.

Cool, thanks for the help. I was pretty hungover when I tried it, but Colin's explanation didn't make much sense after the 4th line, and there was a whole page
My main problem was the routing... I was definately doing something wrong because the compressor was affecting the bass as though I'd just put the compressor on the bass channel and not sidechained it at all.
Hopefully I'll figure it out soon... if not I'll ask again |
