I know one way to make hallucinogen sounds is to put an EQ on a sound with a high cut... and then a steep notch with a lot of Q pointing downward, and an automation on the inverse peak.
You should try it on a pad or something with a wide sonic frequency bandwidth.
This would have some what of a phasing shift, right? What do you mean by Q pointing downward? High Q or Lower? I will experiment, but sounds bytes could help as well.

Trying to put a quick tutorial together but for the time being this explanation will have to suffice...
I used Sylenth1, because I thought it would get me the closest to the sound (also the original poster on Gearslutz used it as well). Its a great synth, I love the waveforms on it. I used a simple SAW (its the default sound when you load an "init" patch). Single voice, and "Retrig" is off. The polyphony is also 1, so the whole patch is mono-phonic.
Filter is set to the Band Pass, with 12dB slope. i found the 24dB to be much duller sounding. The modulation on the filter cutoff is crucial to the sound. I actually have 4 modulators.
1. Is an ADSR with Attack/Release 0, decay is minimum, and sustain is 0.
2. There is another LFO on the Filter, which is very slow and set to a rate of 8/1D, so this throws some randomness into the sound, without it getting too "loopy"
3. The filter cutoff is controlled with a drawable filter envelope for 1 bar as well. This is done in Ableton by just drawing automating in the Midi clip its self.
4. I then (cause it was too loopy), drew in some automation for 4 bars. Experiment with this to cause tension/release at the end of bars.
I used foldback distortion, delay and reverb. The distortion was set to less then medium amount, just enough to cause the sound to "quack". The delay/reverb can be added to taste. But the distortion needs to be just enough.
The end result sounds like this (mind the lines at the end, more experimenting).
Sorry for the Bass/Kick, I was using Fabfilter Demo plugins, and the time limit is over (will they ever go on sale?)
Feel free to upload your sounds. Soundcloud is free, we should be sharing more sound.
I hope that helps, let me know if you still are stuck.
