How do I know what scale my song is?

The thing is that some scales use the same notes. For example A minor uses the same notes as C magor. How do I know which one of these two my song is written in? The way I understand it is that you get a sence of relief when you hit the first note of the scale. But is there a more scientific way to determin the scale?
And another thing. Sometimes I jump from one scale to another. A classic example is whaen you play one bar in one scale and the next bar in another scale and keep doing this throughout the song. Does that mean that my song is written in two scales? Or is always one scale predominant?

it's either a sense of relief,
but it's really the root note which represents the scale. Scientifically, i'd say that each frequency u hear - responds to other chosen 3 frequencies differently.

a C major(C+e+g) is not really A minor(c+e+A) btw...

it depends which scale actualy.
C (major) Ionian scale would prolly have same notes as A (minor) Aeolian scale.

but who cares for the names anyway - the important thing, since we are ionian scaled ppl most of the time - if u play c,e,a with a C root - it wouldn't sound c major at all.... it would be very un-solved kind of sound.

mate , i think u are a lil confused here in scales and keys ...

scale = series of notes across an octave ...

different series = different scales ...

dorian , major , minor , pentatonic ... different scales

keys = family of chords for a particular key / note ...

for example key of c major , key of a minor

sowhen u compose in scale , scale have their own chords and progressions ...

but when u compose in a key of a specific note [ which have limited specific chords which can interact in any no, of ways with any amount of progressions ]

so u need to understand this !

hope i was able to explain ..

plur ... boom !

there are actually very small frequential differences governing what a key is. If you play a tonic C major triad (C, E, G), whether it be an inversion or not, the note C is the root note. A long time ago when the Pianoforte (piano) was invented, they would 'temper' the piano to play in one specific key so that none of the notes played in the scale would be harmonically wrong, however, this meant that if you played a C major scale in an A major tempered piano, it would sound wrong. Synthesis has the standard use of notes (using specific frequencies e.g. A 440Hz - octave above 880Hz etc.)
still, after that little outburst, a major scale is just a progression of whole notes from the root note. a minor version is one which sounds 'sad' because the 3rd is flattene, then there are Harmonic minors (slightly different as they change according to whether you are going up or coming down) and indian raga scales (chromatic-ish). clarifying what key something is in is done by looking at the notes and seeing what chords they are built on, and from there finding the root notes of these.
It will all make sense in the end
hope this isn't all too confusing and off the point!!           www.myspace.com/beat_nik
