another question:
is it necessary that you be able to do live-acts when you think about record-labels? |

not supose to be , asuming your track is longer then 6:30... psyshop/saikosound/arabesque also have samples before sell ..
and btw , i can recomend peaples here to have some trust . i sent my demo's to milion labels , agreed to any contract/no contract.. and now after some time im getting well paid.. (even for those older trax , the cd has been sold and profits do come adventualy)

hehe
a year has passed since this...
now i have abit "new" view on this , after getting fucked several times..
so , still , yeah , send demo's about anywhere , spread your music as much as possible.
now , someone wanna realese it... insist on getting payd in advenced if u wanna see the money.
i lost some trust because of coule of assholes didnt keep their word ...
also , if u believe u have realy good music , dont compromise on the price too much. if its realy good label should pay nice not 200$ , which can be cool for begginer tracks. www.sattelbattle.com

Take that with a grain of salt of course. Don't start asking for 1000$ either because market economics do not justify such advances in today's psy CD business model.
I know plenty of rock bands and successful electronica producers who are more in touch with reality and despite being very talented, continue to remain humble and realistic with their pricing scheme. |

lets just say there are projects who get 1000$ (or eu) and no one ask why.. or think they are not humble..
cause all know they are most talented and well known. (yes some cd's sell nice and make nice profit still) all im saying is aim to be worth it as well (i know i am)
for sure if its simon psford then peaple would think its ok to pay him 1000eu or more for track
offcourse u saw i think begginer track might worth abit less , lets say 200$ is nice for first realese... but if u think your first realese aint less good then proffessional tracks , i cant see why to get paid less.
and there is planty of room for big talents and real talent + hard work = profit , not as main goal , but as main way to survive and keep focus 100% on music

You can aim to be worth it without being greedy IMO. Is it your aim to make money or to get your music heard and give joy to your listeners?
I mean I take for instance John Lord Fonda who is a very succesful French artist on Citizen Records (Vitalic's label), whose CD has sold more than 12,000 copies worldwide (I trust my source) and the man is still a teacher in Dijon.
Why you ask? Well because perhaps his only goal is to make music, have fun, play live sets, and make a little money on the side for great toys like synths and gear and that's it.
Seriously, I always get this prevailing feeling that psy producers are always so greedy or out of touch with reality. I'm on quite a bit of forums and money is a recurrent theme only on isratrance because I get this feeling that psy producers feel that their music is more sophisticated and elaborate, takes more investment and time, both points I can agree on, and should by definition be worth more, and I'm sorry but I disagree.
Tsabeat, I like your music, but I remember reading your posts before, how you tried to justify what kind of pricing scheme artists should ask for their art. It just doesn't hold up. You have every right to think your music is worth x, but if a label only makes 5*x and he has to pay 9 different artists well then I guess the artists will start pointing fingers like many do and start blame the label, the file sharers, the distribution or whatever other scapegoat there is to explain the lack of sales. God forbid no one can step back and try to judge their own work objectively. |

I think artists should consider keeping their music for their live acts, I believe many already do that like Talamasca. He plays very often abroad. When the tracks get worn out or out of style as it all too often happens in this underground genre, release the music for your fans, for free even, again like Talamasca, as a gift to your listeners.
Or else sell recordings of your live acts at sets like what Sonic Youth does or Phish. Hey they still sell audio mixtapes I tell you what and they make a ton of money on merchandising. Just a thought. |

the funny thing is that the good labels agree with me
from my point of view , which comes to make the scene and music better , a label who cant sell enough to cover expenses includ paying artists shouldnt keep working.
now if that happens , the other labels (the good ones) will have abit more money and can make their 9*X easy.
offcourse it meens less music realesed , but aint evryone cry that 90% of the realeses are shit ?
i will not name names or numbers , but many labels making nice profit from their realeses , and there is no reason for artists to work with ones that not. usualy it will also reflect on the promotion the label makes .. reflect on the gigs they can help you with etc.
it also meens that good label will bring your music to more peaple , and make even more peaples happy from it , which is the main goal(and not making money out of this as u try to suggest)
today i want as much more peaple to hear my music not only 300 , it happens only with the good labels in some magical way.
i used to give it for free on the net and still do , but the realy noticeable tracks are the ones realesed , as bigger the label is , the bigger exposure it gets. www.sattelbattle.com

so what do you do if you are an old skool fucker like me, and no-one is releasing in your style anymore?
either internet sites like cytopia or just distribute for free and try to create a buzz (which people are (rightly) quite cynical about IMO)?
Perhaps I should be trying to push the DJ set thing?
