hi guys
does anyone have any tips on improving stereo width on leads and to tracks overall? i been noticing that my mixdowns sound a bit narrow compared with cd releases and wondered if anyone could help. i guess this is 3 problems
1. are there any general rules to panning?
2. are there any good ways to improve the stereo width of a lead?
3. are there any good ways to improve stereo width after mixdown?
cheers guys, your thoughts would be very welcome. m |

im not a big fan of stereo imagers... they all do the same thing which is a false sense of width based on phasing... waves, nomadblue, ozone, even uad1... all suck in my opinion on this.
i think u can make your mix bigger with other ways, like selecting interesting "sensed" stereo samples on percussions or other groove loops.. or panning certain sounds who are "in dialogue" to the left and right. even leads can be somewhat panned to the sides, this creates more room in the mix if done right and gives u the sense of depth and space.

to improve your lead and give it more width...
steps...
1. double it
2. pan one hard left, the other hard right
3. put delay on ONE of the leads (right or left) (slight) the rule is the right, cuz right handed people see and hear more with the right side of thier bodies, and most people are right handed. it's more noticable there, hence appears bigger.
4. not too much delay. reverb can work too, but you want it invisible. (too little delay makes phase, too much delay, well sounds like a delay)
5. woola, enjoy your bigger lead
BTW, if you have a rhythm synth in with the lead, do the same, but pan opposite.
must be done in the mixing stage, after mixing, you can maybe try some eq and stuff, but won't get the same effect.
by the books. and it works.
check out this link... it's general mixing rules...

the lead is still in the middle,
when mono being left and right merged.
my old crappy mono tape deck only played the left side, hendrix sounded pretty wierd on it...
I didn't know the wind cried mary had lyrics til I heard it in stereo. cuz the lyrics were panned pretty hard.
and actually,
the betabugs, widebug plug... does a pretty ok job widening... only control is -9 to 9
(vst's should go to 11)

try this, create 2 buss ,one panned hard left and the other hard right, turn the 2 buss out of phase ,then duplicate your track you want with a nice stereo width and pan it hard left other hard right, use the send to route the left track to the right buss and the right track to the left buss, ajust the level of the send to taste but use same for both, now you havea nice stereo width who dont make problem in mono. |

most of the methods i know have been mentioned...but if you're using vanguard there is a nice usefull stereo imager in it next to the oscilators, also if you're using ableton live like me the reverb has a stereo imager..but the vanguard one is really special imo.

well in logic audio there is this thing called sample delay..try it out ..it works just fine for me >)...also using ordinary delays with no feedback and matching notes kinda creates a wide stereo effect...thats how i "stereolize"

are u talking about the 'phat' knob (no pun intended)?
i'm not a big fan of this as it's using phase tricks to create width and when you collapse the mix to mono you'll loose the lead. this has always been my main gripe with vanguard.
the other suggestions are good. simple way is to take a mono lead (recorded in stereo) and add stereo delay panned hard left and right, sounds fat in stereo and solid in mono.
peace

could also try this works especially for mono channels or for vsts if you won´t bounce them to audio...
- make a send pan it hard to one side, insert a delay just with 1- 20 ms
- pan the channel hard the other direction and open send channel until it fits...

put a gentle phazer of flanger or a really fast without feedback stereo delay.
Elevatia Wide Boy which is free does a nice job as well.
