I like DJs/Artists that walk around the dance-floor and usually talk to people.

Please don't do this.
Nothing more annoying than DJ's babbling away on the dance floor. Go somewhere else to talk! Especially DJs. One word or two is ok, otherwise respect the DJ that's playing and the people dancing.

Anyway. Best way to engage? Eye contact and smile, as Elad said. That's all that's needed.
Everything else will grow from that.

I know its purely music and all that, but apart from the music.. what else do you do off the console, out side the party, or at the party to keep your audience engaged?

If it's all about the music then there is no APART from that.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

I am completely incompetent in this. I am so fucking timid when playing out that you could as well put some machine up there. Well, maybe I am. It is just that it is impossible for me to go balagan over something I have wasted hundreds of hours on

as a dj, just be free and make sure you are having fun, your vibe will rub off on the audience.

ok so its not ALL about music , 2 djs can play the same set for same people and the respond is different cause one is more smiling and talking with people and projecting different energy...

+1

exactly.. it also comes down to showmanship maybe.. not everyone at an event or party knows how well you are mixing.. or what a killargh track selection you are employing..
heck.. even a facebook or myspace profile can make a difference when it comes to engaging your audience.

i think that anyone who saw cosmosis's live can attest to what a difference it makes when he keeps smiling and jumping with the crowd - he is a great example of a dj feeding to and from his crowd...

another example would be anyone who was at shpongle/hallucinogen's show at the indigo festival 2 weeks ago - anyone who saw him could feel how much he is into the music and passing it on to the crowd - that was about the third time i see both his shpongle and hallucinogen live acts and it was totally different from the other occasions where he was a little bit indifferent to his surroundings and it made a good set not more than ok - as opposed to his preformance on indigo festival which made a great set amazing

while not playing, i think dancing and just being a friendly, approachable person is all a DJ needs to do... but certain party tricks like poi spinning, contact juggling, fire spinning, etc. can also be cool.

During a set, I always like when DJs do more than just have their head down and their headphones on all the time. I always find that I get more into music when the DJ is dancing and obviously enjoying spinning.

Also (this might get me flamed) I think the psy scene has sorta lagged behind some other genres of electronic music in terms of utilizing new and different technology and techniques for DJing and performing live - at least from what I've seen (I also make dubstep, and work with lots of dubstep/glitch-hop people). I'd really like to see more psytrance peeps adopt laptop based rigs, just because it allows for more expression and manipulation of the music. Granted, it's really easy to totally mess up an otherwise good mix with excessive, inelegant use of effects, but it's also possible to add a great deal of unique character and personality with tastefully chosen and applied effects. And even if you aren't into using a Laptop, some of the new hardware tools (the Kaossilator comes to mind) can really make a mix more unique and give your audience a more interesting show.           Psytrance DJ sets-->
