My question is,when you were "noobs" in music production you used your own samples,or did you used others artists samples, then gradually started replacing with material of your own?
For example, after finishing my first track ,now im working on the digicult remix contest, because i find it easier to work with some samples.I'm trying to do my own sounds (kick, basslines, drums, some of the leads and ambient sounds) but there are synths and all that stuff, that i find hard to produce, and basically im producing about 70% of my tracks, the other 30% are samples.
Do you think this is a nice way to progress in music production? Using samples then gradually replacing them with your own sounds?

I have to disagree.
IMHO Fun play a very important role too.
bottom line: do what you like in any sense. |

Becoming a sample "master" does make you an artist then? |

yes
if you think not then forget 80% of electronic music
i agree output is what matters.
it doesnt meen tho when i hear a 90's melody in house track that its not stolen composition but you are better artist the more you can hide the samples (prodigy tutorial is good brain shocker on that subject) www.sattelbattle.com

I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I haven't made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.

made me lol
BTW, when i started i had no samples no synthesis knowledge, no interesting synths... i guess it all just comes with time, learning and making friends.
Using samples is good, but if you really like this activity you should learn how to create them, or make ur own libraries. |

that's what i was talking about, creating your own samples!
And that is what im trying to do,step by step, creatung my drums, creating my leads, bassline etc.... Right now i'm just lacking in music theory! |

I am still a noob and i learn that its hard as it is doing good music. It´s great to learn from others and learn from loops, and learn from playing around your self
in the beginning of my journey i was very anti loops
and i thought it was wrong, but nowadays i think its pretty okey, but i still want to make my own, and devoting the time to do them is well worth it in the end. Still sometimes a nice loop can add spice to things, and you can either make it your self or use a premade, you still have to fit it in the mix, often add FX and do some work to it.
making perc sounds from synth can be pretty interesting, also using dedicated percussion synths can be real nice, there is often many things you can tweak to make the percussion sound fit better into the mix.
Sometimes it can even be better to sculpt and shape sounds so that they are as good as possible for the mix.
The time spent on finding a good sample versus the time spent on creating one can sometimes be the same.

this is not good way of thinking, if you use samples, sample cd, patches, etc, you are cheating! no you are not cheating! you must use all resourses you have to learn the best you can, many times i will use samples from some sample cd, or some presets on vst for particular sound, because it is good quality, and it compliments my sound nicely, helping my sound look better, sound better, it helps give you that initial confidence you need to keep spending more time in the studio working, and smiling and feeling good. and then when you hear the same samples used in some other artists work/track, you will instantly recognise it, so that realisation of, everyone has the same sound samples, presets, sample cd's, make you work to find a more genuine sound of ur own, making you work more in the studio,so i guess this actually helps finding the artist his own orignal sound in a way.

Ok, since i'm a quite new producer it would be sort of interesting to see it from my point of view.
If you are a noob at music production, id say you have limited knowledge about it. I myself needed to get my hands on Logic to actually get some killer sounds.. Reason is just a monster to deal with, all those damned cables, my ass.
It's very satisfacting to initialize a patch and actually get a very killer sound, and know how to work with FX properly.
Using samples just.. i'm not saying it's cheating, i like a good voice sample now and then, and i usually sample kicks since i find that a little complicated, though i found a way to do it in the sylenth one.
anyway, what i'm saying is that when i was a total complete noob i used almost 70% presets
didnt know at all what the EQ did
i worked in reason
the compressor there was horrible and that didnt help me out much..
