Some people say: Don't post your tracks in places like soundcloud, myspace or whatever.
Other people say: Post everything everywhere.
Which one is right?
I was wondering, how did most of you got signed?
I have some material and haven't posted yet and would like to get some tracks signed.
Thanks.. |

Made tunes.
Posted them on myspace.
Ektoplazm got interested.
Released an album with Ekto.
Made more tunes.
Released another album with Ekto.
Took part in the Sheyba trance africa express remix competition.
"Won" (I don't feel music is a competition) the competition.
Then the competition got canceled due to a number of die hard goa trance producers (some of which also took part in the competition) attacking our style and the credibility of the competition because our remix was not old school goa.
Yet the remixes got released including our own.
Made more music.
Made a Souncloud account and posted some of the new tunes.
Some labels (I am not going to name names) wanted to release it, yet we said no as we did not feel our sound was suited for, something which is important to acknoledge, you gotta choose wisely as to not release music with other music that has nothing to do with the sound you're after. Anyway its good to wait for the good labels to knock on your door.
Then Neurobiotic records wanted to release it.
Released the Mars Mellow EP with Neurobiotic.
Released the Purple Shade EP with Neurobiotic.
Then people like Etnica and Deedrah liked our style and wanted us to remix some of their tracks.
Then Etnica asked us to get on board Etnicanet which is our current label state as we are on two record labels, Neurobiotic and Etnicanet something of which we are very chuffed about
Peace out.

there is no right way it also depends on your view on music and releases (free vs commercial). in today's music world it is pretty much both soundcloud/myspace as well as labels - both are important to your development.
also, don't expect some label that took a track from you for a va to then help further promote you. it is up to you to keep a buzz around your project.

it s all about friendship and relation imo it make things easier.
meeting the right persons are the right times.
get in touch first with labels ask them what they are looking for, if they are intrested with new artists, ask them some feedback on your music stuff like this...
with "big" labels it s harder from my experience, they are more intrested in etablished artists with some "fans" behind them or like i was saying if you have good relation/friendship with some artists or label managers it helps.
Nectarios thats nice mate! do you know when we can expect a new compilation or something on etnicanet? |

Really nice and inspiring story from Holligans seriously.. Thank You
And thanks to everyone for the tips.
Promotion websites plus sending demos is the way to go then.
Sorry for asking something else, but, should I get a copyright for the tracks that I will be posting? If so, whats the way to do it? |

made some music, got it released on labels,
I honestly do not know how it happened, but it involved little work on my part except just making some tunes. This was in the days before the net became a big exponent for things such as this. It was circulated on dats and given to very few people (which in turn got sort of out of hand once cd writers became of age)
How it works now is a little more cloudy, but one thing is for sure: Make music with your heart and soul! Not because you want to release it but because you know of nothing else that makes you happier. Passion+experience and skills will shine through enough for you to get noticed, if playing the friend game does not work out, that is

Just make good music, the rest will follow. But do play a part in spreading it wisely. Soundcloud it to the right people, send e-mails to labels with profiles who corresponds to your music.
Never ever spam people with links and "Hi please listen to this". That will only make you less attractive as a musician. Getting something released is just as much about timing as making good music.

Don't send unfinished tracks, it's annoying...
Soundcloud and Myspace is cool for showing your style of music, keep the tracks you want to release secret, and show this tracks to some labels in mp3 or wav format. Update your Soundcloud with released tracks from time to time.
Send tracks to DJ's (Real ones, not just wanna take your unreleased track DJ), make friend with them, and ask them how your music is reacting with the audience when they are playing it. This is good for crushing your ego and to know that your music will never be perfect and you must improve all the time.
Don't expect too much money from making music, if you make some, invest it back in the music - buy new synths, audio interface, plugins, or anything that can contribute to the quality of your music.
Remember that music is made for enjoyment to the people, you are not making the music, you are just an instrument of god, and consider yourself happy to be part of this.

Pestered labels with my sound, no one was interested, then I learned to make the sound sound easier on the ear (still and always learning), then got Nathan from Geomagnetic interested to release "steamroller" Ep, for free on my end, released with him, then made more sound which got better (still is getting better), got another label interested and released "Yawning", got Another label interested and will release a 6 track ep ( Panick Button) with Warp Brain records on September 1st this year, worked in the meantime and got my first ambient album mastered by Colin, which will be released this autumn ( the awesomest yet . ), got asked by a label for another full ambient album to come out in Dec 2011 or the following January, and have currently a label interested in releasing a dance album, which I will get to as soon as I can... Almost all happened this year, and the rule of thumb is... Keep going, keep perfecting, learn from everything... the sound finally seems to be good enough to get labels interested... And wow, something is starting to happen...
There will also be a track of mine on swaroopjis Respect comp ( looking forward to that one... )
Oh and a freebie ambient track of mine on a compilation that will likely get released on Ektoplasm soon ( will keep y'all posted... Also had stuff on myspace... And, most of all, like Monno said, make music that is you, really your heart and soul... That is some great advice for sure !
