The reason anyone should DJ any sort of music is because they love it - and to be honest - I don't think you would get very far if you tried doing it just for the cash.
The advice I would give anyone (besides practising and listening to as much and as wide a range of music as possible) is to take gigs wherever you can. Nobody is going to ring you up out of the blue and offer you a primes slot at a festival!
You need to ask any party around - starting off with house parties - can you do the warm up - even if its only to two people - playing out anywhere is worth weeks of bedroom practice!
If no one will give you a slot - organise your own parties. Find a bar or cafe thats quiet mid week & ask if you can do a night there as you'll bring some friends down. Then invite other Djs to play - hopefully you'll then get invited to their parties and so it goes on...
If promoters know who you are - you may then get an opening slot or afterparty slot - and if you do a few of those well (and don't play your 10pm-11pm slot like its the end of the night!!) - you may get a better slot etc
