Keyword: Experimenting.

And, never use presets!
Also, I never listen to trance-music at home. I find it better to seek inspiration from other types of music, or else you'll end up doing some dance-music clone that's just a mixture of 15 allready existing styles, kind of like tech-progg-house-bitch-fullon... or something..

experimenting
playing with sounds
doing what your mind tells you to do (if it says mainstream fullon, change your mind then )

anyway listen to 10000 of different music. get inspired.

and Anders, tech-progg-house-bitch-fullon sounds like i wanna do it

The honest, but unpopular answer is that you find your own style simply by writing a lot of music over a long period of time. After a lot of work and time in it will slowly begin to emerge.

You can of course "work" at developing your own style, but for the most part it is a subconscious process. When I started making trance I had something of my own voice from fairly early on, but that was due to playing guitar for 10 years before I ever touched a sequencer. I developed a certain melodic sensabilty playing and writing music with bands that came through in my psy-trance work to the point that I can often grab a guitar and find out that whatever part I just wrote falls very neatly into the guitar.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

Spent a while in 1995 trying to write tracks like Hallucinogen.

On one hand I failed as my music didn't sound anything like Simon's; on the other it was a great success because it didn't sound like anyone else either!           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Think about whats your favourite style of psy trance/your fav. act.

Listen alot to it. Try to do sound like it + your creativity = you will get your style.

Do a lot of music.

i try to imagine what other genre's of music would sound like behind a 4/4 and just run with it.           www.organicparadox.com

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

I don't think about style at all. Styles are just words, your music is whatever you want it to be.
