The point is to manipulate, cut, tweek and timestretch loops into your own creation.

I noticed this the other day. I am very suprised that an artist like Ace would use a midi lead from a sample pack |

At first I was surprised too, but then I realized that Yoni's music is moving toward a zone when notes are no longer important Ok, maybe this is too much, but with such crystal clear productions and song structures, it does not matter if he uses a midi or a wave loop: it is still very entertaining music.

I use drum loops, but always effect them and chop them up, I use drum fill samples. I would never use a synth line sample or a bass line but percussion I see nothing wrong with.

Using loops can really help with groove in your percussion parts.
I also like to extract groove from loops. Or if I like certain pattern I extract groove and then use it as a midi sequence for samplers, synths. This really works great in ableton.
You can get very interesting stuff out of premade loops just by cutting, reversing, gating, stretching the audio. I like to build my own loops from scratch but premade loops are equaly essential for me. I always re edit and process them so they fit with other elements in my track. They can add that something to my track really well sometimes.
But Im talking about percussion loops, not synth, FX and basses. Wouldnt use those...
And also they are great for learning and getting ideas about percussion patterns and sound positioning that I wouldnt think of it myself... |

Some artists use nothing but looped audio, Prodigy for example, Ive seen and heard some amazing looping.
But personally I prefer synthesizing what I need when I need it, loops to me are sorta like what I end up with afterwards
Renoise makes it STUPID easy to make my own when I care to, I haven't found any other DAW that comes close to its audio file manip, internally it renders to sample, and the main render control can render each channel as well as each pattern individually, click and bam, 8 bar loops pour out.
But I guess technically I use MIDI loops, mostly kicks and basslines, in the live setup, just as basic starting points to make it that much quicker to get everything sequnced and ready to play.
Sometimes though just for fun Ill make some loops, or mess around with Audiomulch which for some reason makes it easier to make interesting percussion patterns than other programs, or even SunVox which has some nice options for nonlinear pattern arrangements.
Usually I don't use them myself, Ive got an FTP that I throw them onto in case others can use them

or you could call it like it is and realize he half asses his music and its commercial bla bla, but ok
to me, it is like learning your athlete hero takes roids. i bet if you ask him about it the answer will be "everybody does it". meh

I once asked him (yoni) if he makes his own kicks he said never. And no hardware synths whatsoever.

[OT]
Well, I did not felt this way when hearing loops in Ace Ventura.
In my opinion, electronic music in general has always take advantage of loops in his history (see Prodigy); even the genesis of Goa Trance in late 80's involves looping of song parts from old EBM.
Of course today is much different, with hundreds of professional sound packs... But I don't see a problem in using loops, because it is the song structure and overall feeling that makes a song good. He did not copy an entire song: ok, he used a loop, but still made an awesome tune that of course you can call "commercial"; but this also mean that a great number of people enjoys it, as both listeneable and technically well-crafted.
Sorry for the OT.

Bare in mind that the common listener that goes to parties and has a great time, does not know (neither does s/he care) whether anyone made their tunes from samples, or if the artist made every single sound of the mix, from a modular synth with no memory.
We can sit and talk about it on here for ever, it still makes no difference to commercially succeful artists and the people that buy music.
Peace out.

But if you care you should carry on making music the way you like it and not care whether anyone cares or not
Peace out.
