Everyone here will tell you to not follow any specific rules for this, but there are some general guidelines (kick around -10dbfs, master out around -6dbfs works for most psytrance). All the other volumes vary, but in the end it's about keeping the volumes at a level that sounds good relative to other sounds.

The master out volume depends on the person mastering it, but I've usually come across being told -6dbfs.

A good way to go about it is to set your kick to -10dbfs and make sure all your other sounds are sounding good together while your master out doesn't peak above -6dbfs. Again, these are just suggestions, not rules.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

just have a listen to what sounds best to you. usually i start with the bass, listen where sounds best and apply the rest.

for mastering headroom it´s up to you and the mastering engineer. if you dont want to leave that much headroom and you know that your sound is quite good and just needs some finish, feel free to leave the file at -3 db. but one should talk to the engineer and get a second opinion. it´s simply that the more headroom you leave the more the engineer could work on it.

also it really matters how you put things together. personly i find a way things work really good for me:
i start with kich+bass and then i add the important elements (lead sounds) first. after that i work from important to less improtant (at last the very low background sounds) elements and add everything together. if i don't folow this direction i always fail to get a ballanced mix.
and forget the numbers, force youself to work with your ears, all of us had to learn that.           http://soundcloud.com/seamoon

Well, having some general idea of what to do helps out when you're starting.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
