Hi guys ..
i was just watchin a video of richie hawtin doing this..how is he doing this and wut equipment is he using ..??
as far as i understood he has around four or more laptops with each guy sending out multiple loops(on ableton) all routed to one laptop from where he selects wut loops to include and send out to the dance floor...
my question in detail is ..
1 -how does he sync all these laptops together
2- how can he control the tempo of all the loops
3 - wut softwares / hardwares does he use ??
thanks..

have not seen the video you are talking about... but..
using midi-clock i would think... ?
by sending the midi-clock of one piece of software (or hardware) to any additional daw's/sequencers/synthesizers/laptops...
and you've set those to recieve a midi-clock.. They sync.. musically..
in measures.
so when the other laptops send something.. let's say a hihat-line...
it's synced to what the "main" bitch is telling them to sync to. 234 bpm for instance..
so bpm is controlled by the 'master'-laptop and all the 'slaves' just musically obey...

I dunno about Hawtin, I'm sure whatever he's got is far better than what most people use. There are products out there to sync up via midi (m-audio midisport 2x2 is something I have). That can cost a bit of money, but it's more stable.
There's also a program called Midi over LAN where you can sync multiple computers via lan. I've heard the best way to get this to work is to turn on the metronome on all computers, then sync the beat by adjusting the latency on each slave computer.
Tempo is controlled by simply choosing one computer as the master and all others as slaves.

you need a few things, search for and download the following
MidiClock
MidiViaLAN
MidiYoke
get all those, and install them
open midi clock, and set the tempo you will be playing at
open live on both computers
set both live computers to sync to midiyoke in 1
set MidiClock to outut to MidiYoke 1
open MidiViaLAN, and set the input to MidiYoke 1, and the output to MidiYoke 1
enter the IP address of the other computer
hit EXT on ableton
click START on MidiClock
Click STAR on MidiViaLAN
now, you should have MidiClock sending clock signals to YOUR ableton, and the other ableton on the pc
NOTE!!! This ONLY works well in SESSION mode
hope it helps. |

@elastic: have you gotten that to stay synced?
The method I wrote was suggested to me by someone who did a live psy set with 4 people on different computers.

How to say this as simple as possible?
Depends on what software and hardware you have. First, what soundcard o you use? Second, how many midi/Spdif ins and outs does it have? If you don't have enough I suggest getting a midi box.
Timecode and wordclock are your two main syncing possibilities.
One computer will be your master, the other three will be slaves, you can sync in different ways, like using AES/EBU, Spdif, midi, even ethernet cable if your syncing device accepts it.
You can either sync from one device to all other devices or you can daisychain, meaning if you have eg. a midi thu you can go from one midi out to the next midithru and then from that devices midi out to the next midi thru. The problem with that method is latency, after chaining several devices together the last device might be triggered later than the first...
Take my M-box 2 pro,Depending on what I use I can sync from my dat or to my dat with spdif, or a hardware synth with midi cable. Or I can sync to another digi device via loopsync.
Or I can daisychain. So you may be able to get around buying a midi box after all. Check your soundcard specs and do as Elastic Plastic suggested... Check out this machine, it is a syncers dream
It also shows you some of the cables you can use to sync your devices...

On the Mac, midi via lan is built in... so if you use a mac, it's a lot easier to be and stay in sync. I've seen this done with 6 guys in the US as a part of this thing called Slammo.
I also have managed to sync it via lan with another computer using Live and midi over lan CP. I was on PC and my friend was on Mac and we managed to make it work. If you fall out of sync, the master computer just needs to stop and start again and then the other computer will start again in sync.
