Please help..

Right now every track I make sounds veeery different from the others unless I'm using the same synth's and fx's. I feel none of my tracks can go together on the same album. you know what I mean..

My question is:
In order to create "my own sound" , do I always need to use the same Drum Kit, Bass and Sounds ?

I also feel that I loose too much time searching for hats, crashes and percussions.

I believe that if I get this straight, I'll be more confident with what I'm doing and I'll be able to work much faster,
so every good answer would be of great help.

Thanks a lot..

use the same drumkit. don't overdo it, not ALL your sounds, but some basic combos - hat/snare and such. think in terms of a machine - 808 or 909 or any other as your basic beat layer for tracks

Try to create your own samples. Resample them. Add fx and resample them. Make your own synth presets, add different fxs, change some parameters a little, so it still sounds similar but not exactly the same.

But maybe the most important. Just focus on creating good tracks. It doesnt matter that much if they are different in the beginning. It might actually be good! After a while you ll get your own sound going. Don't worry too much about it.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

I actually like to hear albums where all track sounds different, because I think if they sound the same that not as much effort has been put into them. Using the same sound set over and over becomes boring to listen to.

Maybe try sending the album tracks to a professional mastering engineer? Getting a coherent sound to an album with many different sounding tracks is a daily part of their job.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

+1

It's like you have all your clothes in different colors, but the same model, maybe it's your thing, but maybe you know that works for you every time and you don't want to change a thing....Charlie Shin in "Two and a half men" or suit guys changing the ties and shoes only, boring really

The thing with the signature sound or whatever is really in large context, maybe yours is in arrangement or actually originality of every track, don't stuck in one concept thinking this is mine trip, that's lazy after a while, sure you are making tracks in the way you like it, but there is no rule that every one of them must sound the same or have something that is connected to another, it's like you have always the same feelings and thoughts every single day

It's like an adventure, go where the road get you, or just plan to go to one place and pray for something interesting to happen

Learn to synthesize your own so you can tweak something on the spot and later really polish everything, or just learn your library inside out, so you have some clue what are you aiming for, I have kit's in Ultrabeat so I just browse everything faster

You have all the time in the world to make perfect sounding drum parts, don't use the same things that work good every time, sure they are good, but maybe some other sample work better with everything, I always put decent amount of time in that segment of track, because I like when everything blends perfect together, so it asks for time, but personal satisfaction is more important than anything

No, I don't. When it happened so that the music on the album have to be the same? Why do you agree with those stupid rules? If your tracks are different from each other - you are blessed. Use it!

I wouldn't say it is a blessing.
I mean,as an artist, one would want to involve indeed, and go to different kinds of musical experiments.

On the other hand, practice make perfect. You might do a better job on your next track using the same approach, learn from your previous mistakes, and generally build upon yourself.Something that i personally find very important.
Also to that, think of the person who listens to it.People usually digitize information to make it easier for them to screen amounts of info out there.Lets say someone loved your track,he would expect your tracks would have some consistancy. So if he would like to hear something he likes,he would go to hear your other track. That is the reason everything on this planet is categorized.

Even great artists before dwelving into musical experiments (listen to early Hendrix stuff before he got all crazy,it is straight up blues),established something before continuing.

An art is an order first of all, highest for of order one might say.
From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

My tracks also sounds abit different from eachother imo, it can be hard to make a liveset of it, but usually it works well. After sometime you get your synthsounds going and your special technics etc and there will be simularitys in your work anyways. It'll just take sometime. And i also 100% prefer albums with different track styles. Much funnier to listen to imo! As long as it sounds like you've put some effort into it and it has quality written on it it rox

Well i am not a pro..

I do think a little consistency is good whether it be in sound desighn, structuer, bass patterns, leads and variations,, THINGS should not be the same or identical ... they should (stand out).

SO i THINK it comes down to track order if your tracks are diferent try play other tracks befor or after to see wich combine better.

I have been thinking of wrighting an album so i thought what would be the best way to do it and for me its by tempo/bpm . You can play slower songs first or faster songs later... but each song will and should always be different unless you whant it all the same its up to you,,,,hehehe

Best wishes ant

Wooow!! Lots of good answers here! : )
Thanks to everyone.

Faxi and Supergroover - Thanks a lot for those tips.
* That's what I'm looking for.

Overdream and Black Machine -
[ If your tracks are different from each other - you are blessed . ]
Thanks you for that.

Wizack - thank you also. ..by the way, really good the Circle project.

......

Ok now my opinion,
I totally agree with everyone who says that listening to an album that sounds all the same is reaaaaally boring, it's like listening to one long track, but like others I also think that when you follow an artist you expect some consistency on his tracks. Not to be all the same, but to have something that people can identify as being from that artist in particular.
That's what I'm looking for, how to achieve that.

Just being curious,
does anyone use the same kick and bass?

I know there was a topic about that long time ago, but I just can't find it.

I often use use the same kick and bass for a few tracks. But I keep changing it. So in one track I might have the same kick, but I ll add some part of another kick or i ll change the eq. And the same for bass. I ll use the same preset, but I ll use a different distortion or different eq. So it doesnt sound exactly the same.           soundcloud.com/supergroover
