In order to treat your room for better acoustics, you have to know what the problems with your room are in the first place.....
There is no standard was to treating any room acoustically as every space is different.
However there are a certain set of properties that every room has which effect the overall acoustics of the room, and hence the listenning quality
most rooms suffer from low end frequency reinforcing....this means that at certain frequencies due to the build up and lack of dispersion of those frequencies, one gets reinforcement and therefore those frequencies are the most pronounced when listening to any sound source in the room. this is due to the room modes, which map out the way a sound source will move around a room upon reflection from the walls of the room (the most prominent plane surfaces for reflection)
so the first job in sorting a room outis to calculate the room modes....the easiest and ones to calculate and most prominant modes are the axial modes
i cant really explain how to do this here...but i am sure a google search will do the trick, or send me your room width, length and height and i could do it for you.
from this one can see which frequencies the modes cluster, however one must remeber that this is for an empty room lacking any absorbing or diffusing elements
but it would give you a good place to start
very often the main problems are around the 150 Hz and 200 - 300 Hz with most small size rooms,
at these frequencies thin foam will do nothing but to kill your high end due to the nature of absorption (resistance and reactance of the aborbing material with relation to the wave length )
DIY bass traps are the best way to go if you dont feel like spending too much money....google it and see what you can find...
i have designed one which is basically a prism that fits in the room corners, and is covered with speaker breathing cloth.
best advice i can give you is to KNOW YOUR ROOM....i.e play stuff you make on your system on as many systems as possible and you will see whats lacking or whats got to much energy in your mixs and then compensate for those problems the next time you mix....
cheers. |
