I started experimenting on producing Goa Trance about half a year ago(with FL8), and I've done several tracks, and I've been able to see my progress. And I feel like I know a lot, but I wanted to ask people here their opinions and ideas on how I could improve.
Here's my latest track(not finished yet):
http://www.mediafire.com/?ytbxcbflzgx
I'm mainly concerned about the kick and bass (since I master with only my headphones and integrated soundcard, i cant really tell whats going on in the low frequencies) I feel like the bass melody is getting overpowered by other parts of the mix. And that a lot of stuff gets drowned out in crescendos.
Any help at all would great.
Thanks. |

Hi, I just heard you track,
You really Must get at least some decent monitors speakers or headphones of a high quality nature to them...to be able to judge what you are mixing...
I'm not sure what you can do personally. Maybe try a fresh track and always mix on low volume. Do occasinally chech on very high volumes tho..And...if you still want to salvage this track at least add some bass somehow, and get rid of those =VERY= loud clicks.
Just to help, you out, I set up a VERY quick EQ mix [on your track] and showed you a QUICK ballpark eq you should at least AIM for...If I spent all day on your track without it being mastered it would sound alot different, but since you say you ''mastered'' it I am thinking its is all compressed to. So anyway...
Try to aim for a mix [not a master] of something along these lines. What i used is just 3 Waves Q10 eq's with a stereo expander on the whole dang mix lol.

I didn't actually do any mastering on that in terms of exporting the track as a 24bit wave, put it in FL again, final eq, compression, maximizing. So I mixed it, but didn't master it.
The headphones I have are decent, but to me, and it seems in monitors that the bass isn't very prominent.
Should I lower the sound of my kick a lot and lower the octave of the bass (C3 in FL), but when i lower it to 2 it it sounds very muddy to me, or should i keep the bass in the same octave and just make it louder and remove the delay and reverb effects? |

Hey Octium,
I like your track. But...to be honest with you, your mix is about as thin as piece of paper, [according my klien and hummel 500's and I listened the other day on some electrostatic headphones [stax-sr's] I don't think you have 'high quality' headphones, may I ask what kind are theyand you are surely not equalizeing your tracks to their full potentail. Or at least in this case.
You really shouldn't be asking if you should lower the sound of you kick or what octive to use for the bass because if you really did have a decent set of headphones that would be all to apparent as to what to do. The bass would sound way too thin, if you had some decent speakers, the kick is very weak [run many compressors with different settings and eq in 'crucile' areas]
If you lowered the octive on decent phones or speakers the sound wouldn't be muddy it would sound ''gurgled'' and you would raise the octive untill you are satisfied from what it sounds like.
Reverb...Delay...same thing except on headphones it is sometimes hard to judge unless you have some good electrostatic headphones [even then it can be difficult by the very nature of headphones] to judge what to do with reverb and delay.
My advice is still to invest in some decent monitors such as alesis, mackie, or even Adam A7's.
Cheers man. |

''Ideal for gamers who enjoy deep bass''
..definately not for mixing anything..
''18Hz - 20,000Hz''
..not good for headphones you want something beteen 1-5hz+ to get all bass, but you will probably filter out alot most -30hz anyway..
Yes mackie is a well trusted brand...[some don't like it]...personally If I were to get some nearfields they would be Adam A7's although they are a bit more expensive than those mackies, and plus i think the price is 200 for each speaker? so thats 400. Or did i misread that.
Cheers man.

I do enjoy gaming also I realized I did this track with CMSS enabled, which gave me a fatter sound that was actually being created.
I'm a bit uncertain when it comes to boosting and cutting frequencies, is there a strict rule here to make things fatter?
I didn't realize that it was only 1 monitor, unfortunately I can't spent that much at this moment, would these be acceptable?

Hi man,
I enjoy gaming to. Half life 2.. unreal tournament 3 etc...To be honest with you, some of my games are on my music computer [and that is heavily frowned upon by music guru's.]
First of all go into your soundcard's control panel [which ever that it] and turn off ALL ''gaming enhanements'' in fact if you can uninstall them all the better. [not the drivers lol] I know you are on a budget so maybe now is not the time to get a brand spanken new soundcard either, but it should be on your to buy list. lol. sorry. its just that the latency of integrated soundcards are really annoying, and limiting as how much you can do at one time. ''Quality''...is probably 20-30 percent lower than say...even an m-audio soundcard. I prefer RME audio-interfaces and devices for music. I have an audigy 2 plat pro in here for gaming to, i used to make music with it actually.
I would save up for those mackies. I read a few of those reviews.

well, maybe someone else can fill ya in on that lol there is so much to explain... |
