Has anyone else ever wondered just how many people are 'into' psy??? (approximate of course)...cos it's damn hard to tell.
CD sales are a totally crap way of estimating this. Sadly the few conscientious buyers (even these in my experience are, for example, DJs who will download stuff, then buy what they plan to play in public) are severely outnumbered by the non-buyers.
Club ticket sales - the best of luck. Most promoters i know have only a sketchy idea of how many people are at their parties seriously, not a good way to estimate things either, some people listen to psy at home and don't go out to parties, or like once a year, etc...
Now, there are 'official' (ie music industrials) legal download charts compiled from ITMS/Nap$ter figs...and there are stats compiled from P2P networks too (of, for the most part, non-licensed copies. This might be getting somewhere...tracking say unique IPs of requests for a selection of say 100 top track/artist names.
Does anyone else have any bright ideas? Including how to do the above...

Howdi

You would need to define what it means to be a part of the scene ?
Is it enough to just like the music ? Or do you have to go to parties ? Do you have to create something (music, dance, deco? ).

I would look to the biggest festivals for numbers.... Afterall, djs, artists, dancers, label people, organizers and the undercover cops are all there However, I have NO idea how many people go there.

I dont know if I would call someone who just sits at home listening to psytrance as a part of the scene... more like, a part of his own scene. Of course, this changes if that certain someone is taking part in the online communities like this here isratrance or is creating something for others to enjoy:-)

er, what terms should i search for??
krell, i know what you mean abt festivals - but of course even somewhere like boom/samothraki, that's only 10% (or something...) of the people you know who like the sounds!
sure i take your point about being 'part of the scene', but not everyone lives in a city/country where there is a scene to go out to!
still think the number of ppl (ie IP addresses) searching for psy MP3s would - perhaps unfortunately for the labels - give a pretty accurate impression...probably the number of people with more than one computer, would balance those with none (and the guy rumoured to exist somewhere who has NEVER downloaded any track lol)..
why am i interested? well it would be interesting in itself, and also people keep making what seems to be pretty ill-informed comments (not just on forums) about the scene either dying or getting too big, both of which seem to come from no-where in particular... either they put on a party that died a slow and painful death (making them think the whole scene is f*ked) or see loads of new faces at their parties (leading to panic about the commercialisation/mainstreaming of psy-trance).

imo there wud not be more than a million people max....................
try estimating country wise

again its depends upon how u classify a person as being a part of the scene           At the end there is a DOOR & waiting for you on the other side of that door is either HEAVEN or HELL
