Are there any other reasons than height/ getting sound at ear level as to why people place their monitors horizontally rather than vertically?
sorry if this is unclear, pretty stoned atm |

proper placement of monitors depends on particular model (depends on directivity patterns etc...)
so, check monitors manual...

What Medea said, but I basically place the speakers in a way that the tweeters are at ear level and form an equilateral triangle with me ears.
Depeding on hight and the mess on my desk that means my Mackies are horizontal and my Alesis vertical (I think that is opposite to what the manual says).
Just make sure they are not right up against the wall.

Yes, definitely follow manufacturers recommendation in the manual.
It occurs to me that using a typical 1 tweeter & 1 woofer monitor build, horizontal placement creates a tweeter/woofer imbalance easier when you move left to right, because of varying distances from each sound point. Imbalance thru horizontal movement would be minimized while the monitors are horizontal. The opposite seems true to me when playing monitors vertically, allowing a better balance thru horizontal left/right movement, and not so good balance thru vertical up/down movement.

well i had my dynaudio verticaly positioned for along time.. the manual said they can be positioned horizontaly also.
so i tried that just cos i wanted the bass reflex tubes to be further from the wall.. working like this the past 3 months and my impression is that the bass is now more balanced with less booominess and stereo field is wider and more defined.
but i also know that the samson i have the manual sais not to position them horizontaly .
so it always depents on the speaker.

Does the "not directly against a wall" rule applies if the monitor's vent is situated on the front side ? |
