Hey everybody--

So here's two links to the latest drop I've been working on. It's still far from being finished, but the general idea is there. Just need to go back and make everything more precise...

I'd love to hear some thoughts, comments, criticisms, etc...

Nice design and size, though kinda all over the place in terms of theme, eh? Thanks for posting it!

haha-- yeah-- it all makes sense... sort of... when explained. Essentially it started as a depiction of a realization I had at AUM festival that <gasp> we're all animals.

Of course we're all animals, but it was really profound at the time. If anyone's interested in the significance of any of the seemingly random stuff, PM me and I'll make something up... er, I mean... explain them haha -

I find this so very interesting , but at the same time confusing... the point of view isnt anywhere but everywhere.... with symbols that are very much our latest history, 500 years... by the expretion I mean.

You have a good intention...           U.V Art & Design

Thanks Cortex--

It's definitely supposed to be a little overwhelming-- "Sensory overload"

This one sort of became an experiment in perspective-- the first time I displayed it at a party it was very much further from being finished than it is now, but I wanted to hang it up so I could finally step back from it and see it as a whole for once- (definitely not enough room in my apartment) Since the canvas is so large, you've got to stand about 20 feet back to even see the whole thing. Once I was standing that far back, the painting really had a “flat” feel to it. When looking closely at the individual components, they all had depth, but from further back they didn't-- For example, the blue lady's breasts disappeared when standing back-- oh no!! haha

In order to make stuff “pop” when painting on such a large scale, I really had to exaggerate the shading and the outlines. The black outlines of the cubes next to my self portrait are more than a centimeter thick! The spiral at the bottom right sort of balances out the flames in the upper right, and with the green perspective grid, it feels like you're being sucked into the painting-- (that was the goal at least)

Like I said, it started as a depiction of how I was feeling Sunday morning at AUM, but since then the painting has absorbed a good bit of how I'm feeling these days. It's essentially a big surreal self portrait-- Next one I do I think I'm definitely going to try to reel the ideas in some-- paint ONE more cohesive scene with actual foreground and background and such, but I'm still figuring this painting stuff out as I go... “shooting from the hip” haha

There's a self portrait in the center as Bacchus-- I took the painting “Sick Bacchus” by Caravaggio, and painted my face in. The original is a self portrait of Caravaggio as Bacchus, however, unlike most portraits of the god of wine, which depict Bacchus as happy or partying, Caravaggio's portrait depicted Bacchus the day AFTER the party, suffering from the effects of a nasty hangover. I too, overdid it a little at AUM festival, and was pretty addled and ready to be back down to earth by Sunday morning.

The scorpion is the most recent addition to the painting, and refers to the fable of the scorpion and the toad –

The skull refers not to death so much as it does to inevitability. I have been thinking about death a bit lately due to the death of a family member and the near death of a good friend, but I wasn't trying to make some vast sweeping statement about mortality. I was more referring to the idea that as animals, we're caught in certain inevitable cycles. Mating rituals, birth and death, etc

The rose is from The Hallucinogenic Toreador by Dali-- a tip of my hat to the Surrealist master-- Also
symbolizes you ladies-- you're pretty, but you can sting too if us fellas aren't careful.

The lion is me-- (I'm a Leo) and he's the king of the animals. The bees, the lion, and the self portrait are all the same color-- as in, I'm the lion (an animal), and part of the hive. Goes back to the whole Buddhist idea of no self-- you're me, I'm you, we're all drops in one big ocean. And it was an excuse to toss in some hippie astrology haha- Plus, I'd been talking about bugs with my friend, and holy Gawd there were sooooooo many bugs in Arkansas. I mean, I didn't have individual bug bites on my legs, I had bug bites FOR legs. Thankfully I didn't get into the chiggers, but lots of folks there did-- yikes. So, anyhoodles, I was thinking lots about bugs... and have you ever noticed how different parties have different "feels" to them, not so much due to the music being played, but due to the collective personality of the attendees? The “hive” personality-

The green gentleman is in anguish-- he comes from an anatomy book by Burne Hogarth-- and spiralling out of his head is the worry spiral-- each cube represents a worry...

And the “queen”--- well... more than anything she's there because that's what we guys think about... and because a friend told me at our Gil party last year-- “Kelly, I've been looking at all your deco, and I really like it... but you don't have any paintings of hot women” haha
At AUM i wasnt feeling too keen on the ladies due to recent troubles, so that's why she's blue and situated over the vanishing point of the painting-- cold and distant.

So there you have it-- hope you enjoyed the tour of my brain           Punch You In The Eye
