I'm really lost on this one. The last 2 times I've played live, my computer causes there to be a hiss in the speakers. It's obviously a ground loop because it goes away when I unplug my computer, but this is the strange thing: it doesn't happen with the person's computer who I'm doing the live set with. It doesn't happen when I'm producing at home either.
Anyone have any insight into this? It's been on different systems in different states, so the only common denominator is my computer - but this doesn't happen when I'm at home and it doesn't happen with the person who is playing live along side me.
I'm playing on an hp laptop with an m-audio fast track pro. The last live set my partner was using a fast track ultra.

Does it do the hiss when you're using a different sound card?
Try using his sound card or another entirely; try using your stock audio driver with the fast track not plugged in.
Also try reinstalling the drivers, or a system restore to when you last knew it worked.
To me fast track pros have a bad reputation for being REALLY touchy and finicky. I've seen lots of artists have problems in different states and also countries.

Could the soundcard be causing the ground loop? When I just unplug my laptop power cord, it goes away. I've seen other people with the same soundcard play on the same system as me and mine was the only one to cause a hiss...

It's possible. have you tried playing through the stock sound drivers yet with the fast track unplugged?

You mean through my laptop speakers? I haven't tried that yet.
I have also listened to a recording and there is no hiss sound there, when there was a hiss coming from the speakers.
I just need a way to fix this beyond unplugging my laptop's power cord. http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Try it and let me know.
Although from that info, it seems like it could be:
a.) a short in your sound card's output sockets. (Might as well buy a new card)
b.) a short in your audio cable. (Try plugging your headphones to your audio outs. Buy a new cable if there is no hiss.)

I'll try those, it seems like a strange problem though. The only common factors are hissing speakers when my computer is plugged in. It never happens at home with my same computer and sound card and it doesn't happen when other people are plugged into the same rig. It's also not there in the recording, so it can't be generated from my sound card (I'm plugging the soundcard into a channel on the mixer through rca cables). I run xlr's to my monitor speakers at home, but I don't hear it at home when I plug into my mixer via rca cables.
It seems like either 1- it should happen to me all the time or 2- it should be happening to the other person playing.

I would check your cables...
Anychance it could have been the power you were getting at the shows... was it a geni or from a wall outlet?
good luck

They were both wall outlets, one was dirty, one was clean. I'm still confused that other people played after me with the same sound card and had no problem, the person playing my live set with me (plugged in to the same strip) had no problems and the recording is clean.

One used it, the other used his, which was the same kind (not that that one matters much).
I guess a ground loop wouldn't affect the record out. I'm gonna keep trying this out, it just sucks to find this out at a party. If it was a problem with the soundcard I would think it would always be that way. If it was a problem with the cables (everyone used the same ones), then other people should have the problem too.

Have you tried the same setup but at someone else's house? I'm wondering now if it could be an issue with the power cable/supply.

I haven't tried it at someone else's house, but that shouldn't matter- I'll test it out when I get a chance though. It works at my house, but hasn't worked the 3 times I've played live with the exact same setup. The only problem seems to be my output to the speakers at parties and the only fix seems to be unplugging my power cord. If it were a power issue, then other people should have had the same problem.

There's no doubt it's a power issue. The reason I suggested trying at someone else's house is because residential power tends to be more grounded and stable than at events.
I'm leaning toward the idea that the issue is lying either with the power cord/supply of your computer or with the power source itself. Trying it in another house would rule out an issue with the power cord/supply itself and would indicate a power issue at the event(s) you played at.
At least, to the best of my knowledge.
Where I am now here in Germany... I had recently bought a Virus Snow and through the Snow's audio outs I could hear a faint electrical humming coming in and out at random times. At first I thought it was the Snow, because I never heard it through my laptop's outs when I removed the Snow, and had a lot of the same aspects in my problem as yours but after lots of head scratching and taking the Snow back for another, it turned out that the humming I was hearing was coinciding with a faint humming coming from a kitchen appliance as I never heard the humming elsewhere and could never tell at an event simply because it was always too loud to be able to hear the faint humming. Thus, there was some sort of power issue in the wiring of the house itself or with an other electrical device plugged into the same grid.

It seems most likely that I would need a new power cord for my laptop then since no one else had the same problem at parties when plugging into the same strips. I'll test it out, thanks a bunch for the help jason!
