Anyone who has any suggestions on how long you should keep your hihats so the timing sounds ok ?

Im thinking abouyt the timing to the song.
Often when i don´t shorten my hihats in an audioeditor, they don´t seem to be in timing with my song |

please try to explain it more explicit what u mean with 'not in time with my song'
do u mean they are just to long and are overlapping or do u have an loop that doesn't fit the tracktempo anymore after cutting a part of it?

generally i use a sampler for my hh and adjust the volume envelopes decay to make the hihats fit into the track..

yes, a 130 bmp track can manage much longer hh than a 165 bpm track

Sorry true length for hihats could be very different
for different BPM´s.
But generally when i add a hihat to my kick and bass it usally sounds to play´s a bit slower and it sound that it hasn´t the right timimng.
EYB yes it sounds a bit that the sound overlaps
that the hihat is a bit longer than it should be.
I´ve tried to adjust with the decay on the hihats and it makes it fit much better.
The question that im asking about what the hihatlength usally is in milliseconds is because i´ve found a i have found this kind of "magic formula" for kick´s and bass where i sample and cut a certain amount in soundforge and export it back to fruity loops.
Now im wondering if anyone has a suggestion about a generall hihatlength in milliseconds though i understand this can be very different |

As u use FL just load the hihat sample into the standart sampler, then adjust the volume ADSR to ur needs. E.g. zero attack, decay to one step, zero sustain and zero release. Furthermore u can set cut by itself, this way u can be sure there is no overlaping.

hehe yes there is : 42
neh , it is depend on the sample and the feeling you want from it...
i can defintly recomend to not have the hihats overlap too much it can cause bad hiss on the track (so just make it as long until the next one hit in can be good as well)
layering on other side i like alot just need to be done carefully

i don't know which resources you trust Elad but i've concluded that the magic number is: 44 (due to the bananemian theory)
