High pitch sound that goes higher as the song builds up

Hey guys
Theres probably already been some post about this because it must be one of the most common things in trance tracks.
Anyways, my question is how do you make that high pitched simple sound that goes higher and higher during a build up to the point where its the highest just before it breaks?
My first thought was to play a note for a long time, bounce it down in cubase and bring it into sound forge and then pitch bend it up or something like that. but then you dont get the timing... (i think in a lot of these tracks its moving up by an octave or a note or something per time cycle)
any ideas? |

yup pitch bending is the way, just turn off the snap (hotkey : J) zoom in and edit the timing tightly. if the final pitch of the sound is same with your song's base key, it can sound better i guess. also you'll usually need to resolve the build up with a huge crash/explosion kind of sound. you can additionally tweak any of the pan, volume and cutoff parameters to give some extra depth of course. hope this helps.. |

so theres no way of doing this in cubase with a vst...?
how can you do it in soundforge so that it increases exactly as you want it on each beat? how do i know where the beats will be? doesnt the pitch bending itself speed up the sound file? |

no need to use soundforge actually, there's a pitch shifting function in cubase. export down to audio, import it back, double click on the audio clip, right click and "process -> pitch shift". at this point, if you turn on "time correction", it wont change the length of the file after the process - although it can sometimes sound a bit muddy. and if you want it to increase a certain amount for each beat, apply the process by selecting it beat by beat |

i think the best way is to automate cutoff (bandpass filter) and the pitch rising both. you control it better and you can also do some nice effects as rising the pwm. vanguard is pretty good for this. |

maybe the note velocity too?
you can start from lower velocity(or zero sometimes)and rise up,playing with other parameters as said already!
also,if i understand well what ur asking,theres way to do it via a vsti..simply automate the pitch bend of your note by your external controller's pitchbend or draw the note's pitch on the line for the pitch of your vst!
correct me if im wrong!

Simply a pitch bend can just be done in a vst by setting an LFO to adjust the pitch of the oscillators...
I personally prefer doing this as it gives you the option of controlling the shape of your sound as it is rising (all Gold Ray like)...
I always bounce down though after i've done this... as I bounce most things to audio for the sake of both CPU and for sound manipulation and mix reasons...
You can also do what Diskotek says of course, draw in the pitch bend... but it really depends - so many ways to do the same thing
Or you can just pitchbend a sample using the pitch bend envelope and 'tadaaa' it'll be done...
