Has anyone had any experience playing 192kbp/s+ mp3s over a PA? Not ideal of course, but is it feasible?           Disbelief in magic can force a poor soul into believing in government and business.

192 to 320 is OK. Sometimes really good, sometimes just OK.

But less than 192 kbps is impossible I think. You will get terrible noises.

At higher volumes you will always hear some interference. Generally, 192+ VBR MP3s are the minimum for not getting crap sound at high volumes. 192 will do, but there'll always be those that'll hear the difference (well, 256+ it's pretty hard to hear).           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

It also depends what's your encoder. Use Lame, it encodes it best, and use the q val set to 0. You can get really good-sounding 192 kbps files this way.

Many thanks for the replies guys.. excellent stuff.

Mike, I've found that the Radium Fraunhofer codec is rather good quality wise, despite being slower than LAME while encoding. Check it out, but keep in mind that it's not entirely legitimate software (I think Fraunhofer expect royalties per usage under normal circumstances).

Space: I don't think any programs use the LAME codec by default (I could be wrong here), but you can download it and use it with any mp3 encoding software (eg. audiograbber if you're ripping from CD). You'll find it here: http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/           Disbelief in magic can force a poor soul into believing in government and business.

LAME vs. Fraunhofer is a great battle. Both are very good quality-wise, and tests have been shown to go either way. LAME has very good VBR options (Variable Bit Rate), and is very configurable, and you can use WinLAME as a front-end in case you're not a tech-wizard (I use it myself and it works nicely, even though you may want to add a preset or two of your own). Fraunhofer on the other hand - well, those were the guys to invent this, and in certain cases, the quality there matches and sometimes even surpases LAME.

For more on this subject take a look in www.r3mix.net - even though they tend to prefer LAME, there's a lot of information about this subject.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Unreal Tournament 2003 uses ogg format.
Well anyway, I'm not changing my audio format until there is another and better mature format (not including wma).

the problem in 192 to 320 rate, is that you can never know in which rate it was originaly ripped.
there is a chance that someone ripped in 320 kbp, and sent to another one after been encoded to 64 kbp, and after that it was changed to 192 kbp.
the sound you will finaly hear in 192 kbp will be actualy in 64 kbp.
unless you are ripping it from a CD and i dont see why you should convert it if you have a WAV format.

note : in a big party, with a big speaker the sound quality will not be so different from a normal CD, but there is a differance in the fat sounds, they will be less fat in mp3.

before 2 years i played mp3 CDs , imho it was allot better when i started to work with WAV CDs.

all in all : stay with WAV - allot better in sound quality !           Don't Let Yourself Get Attached To Anything
