I reckon any kind of modular will do. Personally I can't be arsed with cables so: Creamware modular, Nord Modular, Reaktor etc. If you want actual high tech rather than just 'non-mainstream' sounds try something like MAX MSP or something similar. It's supposed to be a brand new world.
