5400rpm is a bit slow, I would try and get a 7200rpm hdd, at least in the long run!!!
Au is a plugin format for Macintosh computer compatible daws (digital audio workstations)
For cheap alternative with pretty stable drivers and decent ad/da converters in your price range look here:

It's good but no midi i/o...

Ok, so MOTU4 is better than MBox3 for me? I don't know how to use PT so I'd prefer to spend less and if I need something better, I'll upgrade. The plug ins aren't too much of a concern now because I can't spend hundreds on plug ins anyway. I'll try some free ones til I get the hang of it first. The last thing I want to do is spend another 1-2K on hardware plus plug-ins I might have difficulty using. Just 2 I/O's are fine for me now. I plan on using an I-RIG MIDI to daisy chain my sequencer/keyboard. I doubt I'll be recording more than 1 track at a time.
So it's fine if my hardware limits me to PT9 and not HD for now. What would you suggest for my situation? MBox3?
Thanks guys,
I heard people on this forum were really friendly, what an understatement! |

Actually they are, nobody sad anything bad, they took piece of their time to talk about PT on trance forum and they are giving you sincere advises and recommendations, imagine nobody said nothing informative, just one guy was like "Pro Tools sucks, E Jay rulz"
And c'mon, you come to trance forum to ask about Pro Tools and you are making hip hop beats, really man, response is awesome concerning subject
Check out Focusrite btw

I dont see how anyone was being unfriendly.
@upavas. Its the Avid Surround Panner. Im not aware of old school panners (Im new to this stuff) . 90 tracks in one session! Wow yes then 5400 would be a crutch then im sure. Although in Logic ive done 90-100 on my system with minor problems but no video and bouncing to audio/freezing tracks.
Thinking of remixing some psytrance in 5.1. Does anyone know of any artists who have done that?

I think he wasn't sarcastic but earnestly happy that we gave him some tips folks.
As to who has mixed trance in 5.1, I have, and successfully so. Just keep the basic rules in mind, make sure your monitors are correctly set (80-80-80-85-76-76)
Smpte itu. ;-). And remember, you only have half the field you have in 5.1 when compared to stereo field , due to phase cancellation ;-) also a few different rules apply when it comes to bass and 5.1, given that you know how to mix 5.1 you should be able to figure it out easily...

Hmmm, not sure what it exactly is you want to do DC718.
I mean do you require midi I/O or are you able to work without it? Also, you say you don't know how to use PT, have you used a different daw before?
I have heard the mbox 3 has better converters than avids old stuff, but I am not sure about it being that good, especially if you want to record an external signal via mic ( is that what you're looking to do?

I plan on using MIDI via iRIG MIDI to daisy chain my sequencer. I have no experience, played around with FL 8 a long time ago. Just have iDevice experience which translates to crap for PT. I do plan on recording vocals via Mic, yes.
BTW, I was being sincere about friendly people here, I appreciate the advice. I know that I'm posting hip hop production questions in a trance thread but I was told specifically that people would still help here... obviously there's always a smart ass out of the bunch, but that's to be expected anywhere. |

"AAX (Avid Audio eXtension) is Avid’s new advanced plug-in format, offering better workflows and sound parity when sharing sessions between DSP-accelerated and native-based Pro Tools systems" - Avid's own words

Working on my first 5.1 mix in a friends studio right now actually with one of those surround panners. Super fun!
|
|
Ah fuck, stop it , it's hurting me, I miss that a ton, aaaargh!!!!!!
You working on the Pro console with the old panners? The best ever made and I really miss that a lot!
On another note, my last session I edited had something like 90 tracks... and a video... a 5400rpm hdd would not cut it...
|
|
I seriously doubt I'll go over 20 tracks, and I'm probably not gonna record them all atone either. Do I need to upgrade my HDD? I never upgraded a HD on the MBP either. |

I think you will do fine with your current HDD. Like I said before i have a MBP with the same specs and running PT10 just fine.
Why dont you try it out first? If you have any issues then we can discuss it further.
