I have PT9 on my MBP, which interface allow me to record vocals, make beats with PT9HD?

ProTools HD9 - 9.0.4
Installled on -
MacBook Pro 6.2 - i5, 2.53 GHz
8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
OS X - 10.6.8
FireWire - 800 Mb/sec
SCSI - None
SATA - 500 GB Hitachi HTS545050B9SA02
5400 RPM HD + 500 GB Ext. HD

Its ok if it there are some plug-ins I cant use and stuff, as long as I can make beats and record vocals, its ok for now.
Just need I/O for mic and sequencer, nothing super advanced.

Im thinking MBox? The Mbox 2 is digital, I think.
Can someone confirm MBox2 is a better fit for my setup/goals?

The ad/da converters on the m-boxes are nothing to write home about, given that you can now use any interface with PT, I would suggest RME with firewire connector. I would also recommend to exchange the hdd for a faster one, 5400rpm seem a bit slow... you should be able to use all rtas and au plugins. there also is a bridge you can purchase for PT to use vst plugins. The real question is, how much money do you have for audio interface?           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

I have about $400 to spend now. I looked up RME and there's are so many kinds, most super expensive. This MBP was a gift and I can't afford to spend so much now.

What is AU?

Is 5400 rpm suffice to record one track at a time? The whole MBP is used for music creation only. I'd doubt I'd use over 15 tracks per song for hip hop.

Thanks again,
D

5400rpm is a bit slow, I would try and get a 7200rpm hdd, at least in the long run!!!
Au is a plugin format for Macintosh computer compatible daws (digital audio workstations)

For cheap alternative with pretty stable drivers and decent ad/da converters in your price range look here:

It's good but no midi i/o...

AU stands for Audio Units. It is a type of plugin extension developed by Apple as its equivalent to VST. And to answer your main question you will be fine with 5400rpm drive and your other specs are also good. I have almost the same specs infact I have only 4GB RAM and Im running Pro Tools 10 absolutely fine even with a video track.

But you mentioned you have Pro Tools HD. The benefit of HD is that you can use TDM plugins. For that you need to have a Pro Tools HD Native system or have an HD card installed in a 3rd party audio interface. Otherwise it will run just like regular pro tools with RTAS plugins.

Actually Im 100% sure AU is not not supported on Pro Tools. RTAS, TDM, or the new AAX plugins only. Mac or no mac

Im curious to know why you think so Upavas? Maybe the plugs your running on PT you have an RTAS version of. Thats why they are opening on PT.

In 10 you are not tied on a few, you can use what interface you want, so i suggest you upgrade to 10

Not sure about it either, just checked and you're right, AU not supported, dunno why I was thinking that... it's been a while since I have dabbled on PT, movie industry here in Vancouver has been very dead for the last year or so...

If he buys a hd compatible soundcard (i.e. 96 i/o or 192/i/o) that would indeed be very cool, as there are some amazing plugins in the TDM realm, not the least of which is revibe (my favorite reverb...)but I doubt he can shell out the $1500 or so a used unit would likely set him back...

I am wondering though, you say you run PT10 with a video track off a 5400rpm drive, either PT has improved a hell of a lot (still running 8 here because I have all the extras for it and don't want to invest another $300+ for all the upgrades) or you don't have very many tracks in your sessions, meaning in essence you are only editing one of the sound components and not all of them, which has always set me back a shitload of tracks... at least a hell of a lot more than 18...

I personally find PT in general a bit uneasy to compose music with, sure, it's possible but FL is so much faster and less arduous. To me PT is always the king when it comes to any kind of editing sound, especially for movies, not the least of which is because it supports timecode and it's also king when it comes to 5.1 mixing or mixing per se, especially when there is a pro console handy (drooling now), but as I said, it's now been a while...

@ Makus, you have recorded this with PT?

I cant say Ive run big sessions on pro tools 10 on my home computer but reasonably large. About 16-18 tracks at the most with plugins along with a video track with very little or no problems. But PT is inherently buggy to begin with. Many of my peers complain about problems even on powerful systems. You are right that it is king for post production and I find it clunky for composing music as well. Working on my first 5.1 mix in a friends studio right now actually with one of those surround panners. Super fun!           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

Ah fuck, stop it , it's hurting me, I miss that a ton, aaaargh!!!!!!

You working on the Pro console with the old panners? The best ever made and I really miss that a lot!
On another note, my last session I edited had something like 90 tracks... and a video... a 5400rpm hdd would not cut it...
