Heroes sort of is very shallow, but they dropped an interesting concept in the last episode of the third season.
Someone is dead, but managed to be still alive, since all that make someone is their memories, the feelings attached to these memories, etc...
Similar stuff happened in the Dollhouse S01E10, where someone avoided to go around death for a while by keeping their memories (and attached stuff) somewhere else.
As far as I remember, science fiction did not attempted that before (at least not in the classics), the previous attempts were mind (or brain) transferences to animals, other humans or machines. Please correct if I'm wrong.

Correction: done in Freejack - even though with a simpler twist (guy who's body's supposed to be used to keep the mind of a dead rich dude on the run from that fate).
