I only glanced at the contents of the article, so I don't have a specific opinion on the actual link he shared...
...but I have done lots of reading about Flouride and I think it is a very valid health concern to have.
I hope to learn more about the topic as med school progresses, because it is something that concerns me.

I think the benefit of decreased tooth decay is worth the possible slight decrease in mental faculty.
Everything has its upsides and downsides. |

uh, Flouride is good for your teeth when you put it on your teeth and then spit it out like the dentist makes you do (also as with toothpaste)...
...but ingesting it is a whole different story. If you want abnormally high flouride concentrations in your circulatory and nervous systems, that's fine with me, but I sure as hell don't want to ingest it, and I strongly encourage you not to as well.
Here is a list of some studies that have been done on the adverse effect of abnormally high quantities of Flouride in our body. I have not verified these studies, and I have not looked at what dosages were tested, but the point here is, I don't want to put any more Flouride into my body than I have to.
I prefer to put it on my teeth and spit it out, as with a dentist visit, and as with toothpaste.
Here is some documentation on the adverse effects of Flouride:
1. Fluoride exposure disrupts the synthesis of collagen and leads to the breakdown of collagen in bone, tendon, muscle, skins, cartilage, lungs, kidney and trachea.
A.K. Susheela and Mohan Jha, “Effects of Fluoride on Cortical and Cancerous Bone Composition,” IRCS Medical Sciences: Library Compendium, Vol. 9, No.11, pp. 1021-1022 (1981); Y. D. Sharma, “Effect of Sodium Fluoride on Collagen Cross-Link Precursors,” Toxicological Letters, Vol. 10, pp. 97-100 (1982); A. K. Susheela and D. Mukerjee,

2. Fluoride stimulates granule formation and oxygen consumption in white blood cells, but inhibits these processes when the white blood cell is challenged by a foreign agent in the blood.
Robert A. Clark, “Neutrophil Iodination Reaction Induced by Fluoride: Implications for Degranulation and Metabolic Activation,” Blood, Vol. 57, pp. 913-921 (1981).
3. Fluoride depletes the energy reserves and the ability of white blood cells to properly destroy foreign agents by the process of phagocytosis. As little as 0.2 ppm fluoride stimulates
superperoxide production in resting white blood cells, virtually abolishing phagocytosis. Even micro-molar amounts of fluoride, below 1 ppm, may seriously depress the ability of white blood cells to destroy pathogenic agents.

Kozlyuk, et al., “Immune Status of Children in Chemically Contaminated Environments,” Zdravookhranenie, Issue 3, pp. 6-9 (1987)
4. Fluoride confuses the immune system and causes it to attack the body’s own tissues, and increases the tumor growth rate in cancer prone individuals.

Other Facts
The contents of a family size tube of fluoridated toothpaste is enough to kill a 25 pound child.
In 1991, the Akron (Ohio) Regional Poison Center reported that “death has been reported following ingestion of 16mg/kg of fluoride. Only 1/10 of an ounce of fluoride could kill a 100 pound adult. According to the Center, “fluoride toothpaste contains up to 1mg/gram of fluoride.” Even Proctor and Gamble, the makers of Crest, acknowledge that a family-sized tube “theoretically contains enough fluoride to kill a small child.”
Fluorides have been used to modify behavior and mood of human beings. It is a little known fact that fluoride compounds were added to the drinking water of prisoners to keep them docile and inhibit questioning of authority, both in Nazi prison camps in World War II and in the Soviet gulags in Siberia.
Fluorides are medically categorized as protoplasmic poisons, which is why they are used to kill rodents.
The September 18, 1943 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, states, “fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons, changing the permeability of the cell membrane by inhibiting certain enzymes. The exact mechanisms of such actions are obscure.”
Fluoride consumption by human beings increases the general cancer death rate.
In 1975 Dr. John Yiamouyiannis published a preliminary survey which showed that people in fluoridated areas have a higher cancer death rate than those in non-fluoridated areas. The National Cancer Institute attempted to refute the studies. Later in 1975 Yiamouyiannis joined with Dr. Dean Burk, chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute (1939-1974) in performing other studies which were then included in the Congressional Record by Congressman Delaney, who was the original author of the Delaney Amendment, which prohibited the addition of cancer-causing substances to food used for human consumption. Both reports confirmed the existence of a link between fluoridation and cancer. (Note: Obviously Dr. Burk felt free to agree with scientific truth only after his tenure at National Cancer Institute ended, since his job depended on towing the party line).
Fluorides have little or no effect on decay prevention in humans.
In 1990 Dr. John Colquhoun was forced into early retirement in New Zealand after he conducted a study on 60,000 school children and found no difference in tooth decay between fluoridated and unfluoridated areas. He additionally found that a substantial number of children in fluoridated areas suffered from dental fluorosis. He made the study public. There is no scientific data that shows that fluoride mouth rinses and tablets are safe for human use.
In 1989 a study by Hildebolt, et al. on 6,000 school children contradicted any alleged benefit from the use of sodium fluorides. A 1990 study by Dr. John Yiamouyiannis on 39,000 school children contradicted any alleged benefits from the use of sodium fluorides. In 1992 Michael Perrone, a legislative assistant in New Jersey, contacted the FDA requesting all information regarding the safety and effectiveness of fluoride tablets and drops. After 6 months of stalling, the FDA admitted they had no data to show that fluoride tablets or drops were either safe or effective. They informed Perrone that they will “probably have to pull the tablets and drops off the market.”
The fact that fluoride toothpastes and school based mouth rinses are packaged in aluminum accentuates the effect on the body.
In 1976, Dr. D. Allman and coworkers from Indiana University School of Medicine fed animals 1 part-per-million (ppm) fluoride and found that in the presence of aluminum, in a concentration as small as 20 parts per billion, fluoride is able to cause an even larger increase in cyclic AMP levels. Cyclic AMP inhibits the migration rate of white blood cells, as well as the ability of the white blood cell to destroy pathogenic disease-causing) organisms. Reference: Journal of Dental Research, Vol. 55, Sup B, p. 523, 1976, “Effect of Inorganic Fluoride Salts on Urine and Tissue Cyclic AMP Concentration in Vivo”. (Note: It is no small accident that toothpaste tubes containing fluoride are often made of aluminum)
“Fluoridation is the greatest case of scientific fraud of this century”
Robert Carlton, Ph. D., former U. S. EPA scientist on “Marketplace” Canadian Broadcast Company, Nov. 24, 1992 “Regarding fluoridation, the EPA should act immediately to protect the public, not just on the cancer data, but on the evidence of bone fractures, arthritis, mutagenicity and other effects”
William Marcus, Ph. D., senior EPA toxicologist, Covert Action, Fall 1992, p. 66

it is important that I clarify that even if a few of the studies mentioned above were unthorough, or even if a few of the 'facts' given are untrue, there are some very credible sources, such as the New England Journal of Medicine for example, which have conducted studies showing that Flouride is harmful to our bodies in a variety of ways.
Perhaps if Flouride was good for our bodies, the dentist would give us the option of swallowing the Flouride rinse after the treatment, as opposed to making us spit it out into a cup or onto that silly bib they make you wear?
This information concerns me, and it should concern you too, which is why I plan on looking more into this topic as I get deeper into medical school.

Here too?
Certainly you realize that the amount of fluoride you are ingesting matters; you can't simply say "fluoride is harmful" without citing how much...

Not sure if you read what I wrote Basilisk, but here are a few things I should point out:
1. I didn't create this thread, but yes, I am everywhere hehe
2. If you read any of my posts above, I openly stated that I did not check those studies to see what concentrations / dosages of Flouride they used in the studies, so I have no idea what concentrations of Flouride were used to determine those results. Based on many of the sources though, I bet most of them are good studies. Either way, I openly stated that I did not read the scientific papers myself due to lack of time, but based on independent reading I have done on this topic many months ago, I personally choose to try and avoid ingesting Flouride as much as possible. I plan on getting a very good reverse-osmosis water filter someday, not just for Flouride, but that is what got me looking into methods of home water purification.
3. Cheers to you Basilisk. Please check your inbox on Chilluminati, because I sent you an important message there.
Today is going to be an awesome day, I can feel it, and I hope it is awesome for any and all of you as well.
BOOM for Spring weather!

So you're saying there are various different fluorides, that have different effects on the body at different concentrations? So you're saying that not all fluoride(s) is/are bad? Could this perhaps be an indication that mass panic and indignation is somewhat misplaced, and that we shouldn't all jump on the nearest scarewagon? Because if so, my personal experiences with fluoride would tend to support that point of view. As I wrote above:

I also have an extremely robust immune system; influenza that lays my friends out for a week gives me 24 hours of sore throat and slightly achy joints. Regular ingestion of fluoride never did me any harm - but then, maybe it was a different compound than the one some people seem to be so scared of.

Someone's done their homework I see... kudos Kri
Also, to the poster above, I never said there were multiple types of Fluoride. I said I was unsure of the concentrations / dosages / amounts of Fluoride that were used in the studies listed above.
Do you literally take pure Fluoride tablets? I am glad that you feel healthy, because that is what matters most.
One of the observations regarding Fluoride which concerns me the most is that some studies have shown that Fluoride accumulates in the Pineal Gland, which correlates with Calcification of the Pineal Gland. Although Fluoride cannot cross the Blood-Brain-Barrier, the Pineal gland is outside of the barrier, and thus, is susceptible to the build up of ingested Fluoride.
I know more studies need to be done to bring more supportive data to the table, but since I am trying to keep my THIRD EYE wide-open, I plan on avoiding the ingestion of Fluoride every chance I get. It is not worth the risk in my opinion, and since there are numerous scientific studies showing hard evidence that Fluoride is harmful to our bodies in multiple ways, I personally choose to play it safe rather than be sorry. This is not about fear, this is about our health, and making the right choices to keep our bodies running in optimal condition. It seems like it isn't the biggest health risk out there, but again, I am not willing to take the risk, so I try my best to drink Fluoride-free water whenever I can.
Here is one study:
Fluoride Deposition in the Aged Human Pineal Gland
Jennifer Luke
School of Biological Sciences, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The Royal London Hospital
Original Paper
Caries Res 2991;35:125-128
Abstract
The purpose was to discover whether fluoride (F) accumulates in the aged human pineal gland. The aims were to determine (a) F-concentrations of the pineal gland (wet), corresponding muscle (wet) and bone (ash); (b) calcium-concentration of the pineal. Pineal, muscle and bone were dissected from 11 aged cadavers and assayed for F using the HMDS-facilitated diffusion, F-ionspecific electrode method. Pineal calcium was determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Pineal and muscle contained 297±257 and 0.5±0.4 mg F/kg wet weight, respectively; bone contained 2,037±1,095 mg F/kg ash weight. The pineal contained 16,000±11,070 mg Ca/kg wet weight. There was a positive correlation between pineal F and pineal Ca (r = 0.73, p<0.02) but no correlation between pineal F and bone F. By old age, the pineal gland has readily accumulated F and its F/Ca ratio is higher than bone.
Discussion
This study has added new knowledge on the fate and distribution of fluoride in the body. It has shown for the first time that fluoride readily accumulates in the human pineal gland although there was considerable inter-individual variation (14-875 mg F/kg). By old age, the average pineal gland contains about the same amount of fluoride as teeth (300 mg F/kg) since dentine and whole enamel contain 300 and 100 mg F/kg, respectively [Newbrun, 1986]. Unlike brain capillaries, pineal capillaries allow the free passage of fluoride through the endothelium. If there had been a bloodbrain barrier in the pineal, it would have prevented the passage of fluoride into the pinealocytes and the pineal fluoride content would have been similar to or lower than muscle. This was obviously not the case: the fluoride concentration of the pineal was significantly higher (p<0.001) than muscle. The high fluoride levels in the pineal are presumably due to the large surface area of the HA crystallites both intra- and extracellularly. In addition, the pineal has a profuse blood flow and high capillary density; pineal blood flow (4 ml/min/g) is second only to the kidney [Arendt, 19951.
