Here's a new idea...

Over the years, I have experienced many unforgettable parties and at the same time witnessed the promoters really struggle financially. There seems to be this pervasive attitude that goes something like this:

"I am a friend of the promoter, so I should get in free of charge."

The guest lists keep getting larger and they place a huge burden on the promoters. For every person on the guest list, the promoter is essentially paying for each and every one - a very generous gift.

I'd like to suggest a new approach:

"I am a friend of the promoter, so I'll contribute the nominal entrance fee to help out my friend."

Yes, I understand that it is customary to let the DJ's in for free plus one guest. And I know many people "volunteer" their time to save the entrance fee (which is often worth it to the promoter), but many DJ's are friends of the promoter and their "guest" is perfectly able to pay and often people are let in for free on the promise to work (clean-up, gate, etc) but are no where to be found when it is their time - and they, too, are capable of paying.

So why don't we all - as a community of friends - help out the promoter instead of leach off of him? Why not pay the entrance fee AND help out at the gate for an hour or so? Why let the promoter - your friend - lose thousands of dollars so you can save $20 or $40 (or whatever the fee)? While you happily party away for free, your friend is suffering a very significant financial loss.

Yes, the economy sucks these days and money is tight for all of us, but why should we place all the financial burden on one or two of our friends so we can save a few bucks.

Spread the love!           Laughter is the shape that darkness took around the first appearance of light.

Ya, bravely put. Lotta hard work and financial risk worth supporting out there.

Many many thanks and praises to everyone who puts themselves out there to make these things happen.

Fantastic points.

Thanks again to all promoters who have continued to spend tireless effort making these events happen.

Not gonna ask to be put on the list anymore.

Bring back the $20 list, if anything!! VIVA VIVA!

Then again, after that post, full price doesn't sound so bad.

Kinda hard to put a price on sanctuary...

In my case, I completely agree. I always pay my way.

But honestly, in a lot of cases you have people who have been partying a long time; and frankly don't show up to parties if they have to pay. Is it right? I don't know. But I usually tend towards the belief that if it comes down to having a party with more or less people, I'd choose more even if those people didn't all pay their way in.

On that note though, those people who get in free should be EARNING their free entrance either through volunteering or donation to the party in some way.           http://www.soundcloud.com/djKAHN

yeah whats all this talk of "community"

seems that concept could be taken infinitely further as we evolve together and that is my hope and dream for our lives in trance and out of it.

if everyone who came to the party contributed - energetically, financially, nutrition, decorations, guidance, deep presence, purposefulness -
imagine the possibilities.

Pay or play your part....

I've even been to parties where I've helped teardown, move stuff and even dj'd at and I paid to get in.

Entry fee <<<<<< money the promoter loses.

I don't let anyone in for free unless they're on the list already (djs + 1 and people who help setup and teardown).           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I totally agree. This subject is really important to me. This is what a lot of people don't understand. Promoters pay out of their asses so that people can have a good time. Especially in some states where parties are the ONLY thing to do.

There have been numerous occasions where I have torn down, set up, and door shifts AND i paid to get in. Wanna know why? Because I love to support something that is a huge part of my life. I would rather pay a measly 20-30 bucks and enjoy a night or weekend of awesome trance then go to a bar and spend that in a hour.

It shouldn't matter if we are friends with the promoters or not. AS friends, we should be willing to help out in any way possible, including financially to help out our scenes. A lot of the times they lose money at events, so any little bit helps.

I never mind paying, because its goa'n to something that I love and my way of life.

I just wish more people could understand this. It really pisses me off that they didn't want to pay 20 bucks to get in, but they will blow a hundo or 2 on drugs at the party. Its bullshit.

But who's to blame? The promoter who lets them in for free or the person who doesn't pay? People can't get in for free unless somebody lets them.           When the music of a society changes,
The whole society changes.

Yes I can think of many DJs mainly from phily and nyc who fit this profile. I have always wondered why I only see a few resident DJ's at parties they're not playing at...Why is that? Is it ego or financial...

But back on topic...Great post - Parties would be much more successful if the comp list diminished from 50 to 5. Yea!! and what monkey said...
