I use many software programs (both real time and offline).
Among the programs I use for real time music creation (pretty outdated, don't laugh) are Reaktor, Rebirth, Reality, Fruity Loops 2 pro, and a few other light ones.
The problem is that I can't run them all at the same time, since I don't have a workstation =)
So I end up using Acid as a mixer, Fruity Loops as a sampler and Sound Forge (with loads of plugins) as a sound editor - all those in order to transfer it to offline editing, since I have 384MB RAM, and that's the basic requirement for efficient offline working.
BUT...
There has to be a more efficient way to do this.
I have a Sound Blaster Live Value (laugh, laugh, I know it's coming, but since I work without hardware synths with an offline mixing job anyways, it's pretty much irrelevant), Celeron 800MHz, and 384MB of RAM (PC100 SDRAM).
So, if anyone has experience with similar working enviroments... Well, HELP!!!!

i don't mean to be mean, but: try using Cubase VST as mixer/arranger/sequencer/sampler and Wavelab as the editor. these 2 integrate with each other very well. and they also get very well with reason & rebirth. another solution is Logic Audio + Wavelab these are [cubase & logic] both complete studios. they also exist long enough to be stable enough. the problem with soundforge is: it is slow with large files.

Why we need to laugh? The programs you mentioned maybe old, but they pretty good. About the SB Live, you not the only one who had it.
P.S. Check the Reaktor 3, Acid Pro 3 |

I liked the advice of Bilbo BaGGinz but instead of wavelab try sound forge as the .wav editor! |

Sound Forge is way slow and it's plugin system sucks, sure you can use a VST adapter, but Wavelab supports VST and DX, plus you can load six plugins at a time and preview/tweak them all.. much easier to get a perfect sound that way imo.. but yeah.. get Cubase or Logic.. or if you don't want to drop that much cash assuming you are buying these, get Cubasis or Magix Music Studio G6 (which is basically a stripped down version of logic, with some other stuff thrown in) both very good programs to learn with. |

First of all, thanks to you guys a lot.
As for wavelab - unless there have been some major advances in it in the last half year, I still prefer working with sound forge - it's just very powerfull and intuitive (and I don't really mind the fact that it can be slow from time to time).
I've been thinking of moving to cubase for a very long time now - it's very strong in controlling other programs (great sequencer) - but as a mixer (I don't intend to give up all of the other programs) I don't know how powerfull it is (in comparison with Acid), and I haven't seen it used intensively with many softsynths at the same time - and I'm not sure that a celeron 800 can handle it.
I want to move to real-time work (knobs and sliders are soooo fun)... Will cubase or logic be able to totally replace acid and work with at least 2 programs (reaktor and another with at least 5 channels as a mixer/sampler) on my PC?
And I'm not new to tracking music you guys - I've been doing it for 9 years - so don't spare me the tech talk :)
Thanks a million :) |

Mate, as you should know, I've moved to Logic Audio from Fruity, so you can imagine that something is much happier in the end.
I suggest you leave Acid as being the mixer - I can't even think of the limitations you suffer (you know the sufferring from the tracker scene allready), and if there's something in those progs that you really need, just play them along with the logic without latency I pressume - though it's hard - or make certain WAV files that you need. All is fun in the pro mixing you will get from working in an arranger as Logic or Cubase (I suggest Logic warmly) - just all you need is alot of will because it's not going to be easy at first.
and just alittle advice on Sound editing to all of you guys: Sound Forge is good for the root sound edit imo. That includes cutting, lowering some edges, finding loops and so on... the WAVE itself. Wavelab on the other hand is very intuitive in the whole sound of the WAVE. You can make an innocent sound, to sound like I don't know what in very little time and very good quality... that means all the EQ and compressor settings and whatever.
Good luckz Trip- |

Asaf, i don't know about long tracks [7-8mins and longer] my specs [don't laugh]- cpu: celleron 433hz, sdram: 192 meters hd: seagate medalist 6400 meters mama'le: asus cuv4x card: sblive, aps drivers i had 3-4 min parts with 6 softsynths playing with loads of fx and mixer automation with cubase r4 sound worked ok, but graphics were slower[i haven't mentioned audio loops and their effects].so i imagine with celleron 800 and 384 meter of RAM it will work ok :-)
i also remember working with logic, and it was even faster.[though i haven't done anything serious with logic]
about wavelab vs soundforge:wavelab is intuitive if you know cubase shortcuts.and in soundforge you can't apply fx on a file and play it back during this. you can really search for a pro reviews[electronic musician etc.], but wavelab is really working more stably.besides it can export into Halion sampler, import from sampler CDs etc. etc. etc. wavelab also can be used as a basic arranger [not too good, but bearable] with "montage" feature and to burn audio CD's, the batch [scripting] feature is better than in sf. i rest my case :)
let's get back to acid: acid is a little out of time... example: in cubase/logic[the last v4.72] u can connect rebirth/reason or other "Rewire" compliant "slave" and use them in really "real time" - they'r synced, and u can import/export midi trasck for reason etc.
it's about time to make the change :) it's summer. and don't forget to RTFM :-)
good luck

Thanks guys.
So basically, picking a cubase/logic+wavelab combination is the way to go...
Well, 16 days until I get the chance to find out =) |

Yo..
just wanted to say that i hadnt read the replies so maybe i am writing something that was written before..
Asaf, you CANT just open the all progz together.
I noticed that you wrote you using reactor and rebirth.
So what you can do if you are using cubase you can use it with your rebirth by rewire, and use it with reaktor by VSTi. and there you go, 3 progz 2gether.
woth the other progz, just play seq, and import them into cubase. (if u use cubase)
btw, win98 & se able to use up to 256mb ram. so more of that not useful if u dont use other os, such as win2k/xp.
happy if i helped ya out. :)
cheers. m0x. |
