12" = the size in diameter of a standart vinyl record. also available are 10" and 7" (less frequent though) Also called Maxi singles since singles were usually on 7" (back in the 70's and before) on 7" you can get about 9 min's of high quality music per side, on a 12" about 15 min's. this changes acorsing with the record speed and the level (volume) of recording.
LP = Long Play. Back in the days of records an LP record was a full album with about 45 minutes of music. Nowdays an LP is considered longer since there is more place on a cd (about 60-70 mins).
EP = Extended play. not a single but not a full album either, usually has 3-4 trax. sometimes double singles are called EP's
CDS (CD Single) 3-4 trax on a CD usualy 1 track and some remixes. |
