Hey Guys , So Heres My Problem ... Its Been A While Since I Started Learning Making My Music And Im Working On Making Psychedelic Full On (Night) So I Know Some Of The Basic Stuff , but My Problem Is With Percussion , I Asked A Few Artist About how They make their percussion .. some said that they use samples , and some creates their own ... so is it okay if one uses samples ? or is it not original , and lets say i want to make my own percussion , i always find my percussions sound like shit no matter how much i try ... is there like pattern for this ? a rule (i know most of u will say there are no rules ) so if anybody here can help with this id appreciate it alot ! like explaining percussions and what are the patterns to make and what are the elements of the percussion , like hats ,snares ,claps(i dont prefer using claps..) and the difference between hi hats , closed hats , opened hats ...etc and which one of those elements should be dominant or in which order they should be and processing them ...
sorry if my question sounds stupid but plz put up with me

Hey there, percussion is one of the tougher subjects to cover since it covers groove, beat, and rhythm.

The biggest most important piece that has helped me is PRACTICE! The more you do it, the more you experiment, the better you will get. I promise!!

now the use of samples is fine, (speaking in the sense that we are talking about one shot samples and not loops.) Loops can even be used pretty creatively as well though if you mangle and experiment with em'. So if you can/want use samples.... make your own. Making your own will be a tad more rewarding since you get to know more about sound design and such. but you'll find alot of hats particulary are all made up of the same "root" synthesis (if we are talking about synthesized hats.) there is a awesome tutorial that also helped me alot a few years ago that was posted up via psytuts (RIP) but luckily I saved each all the tuts from that site! http://www.sendspace.com/file/siq0c4 hope it helps!! have fun!           http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik

let's say the basic position of the principal elements of a drum( from this u can evolve your composition) we are talking about a 4 bars(4/4): u have the bassdrum(kick) every 1/4, so u have 4 kicks in 4 bars, the snare on the 2nd and on the 4th bar, an closed hi hat for every 1/8 or 1/16, so u will have 8 or 16 closed hats, and the charleston between every kick, exaclty in the middle, to give it the same feel of a charleston on a real drum, and a crash or ride cymbal every mmh let's say 16 or 32 bars( maybe also using it reversed) to give more colour and uplifting to the track. for the rest of percussions, u can start using loops( so u can understand how some percussion are written) and listen to some percussionists also on the tube, then try to write your own percussions using samples or drum machines, if u don't know nothing about music theory u can have a look at solfeggio and rythmic solfeggio to understand how bars are divided and not have issues like sincope and this stuff, if u don't want'em on purpose. for equalization, i suggest u to use a "smile" eq for the majority of percussions like bongos tablas etc etc, emphasizing the low and high-midhigh frequencies, if u use fab filter q u can check the DRUMS preset to understand the basics of percussion's frequency range ( u should also check the frequency map, where u have all the frequency ranges of the major instruments) then you should use a small reverb( if u want a sound near to reality) to give percussions it's natural space.
this is the base of all, hope it will help!
