If you can get more cpu power then it's better of course,

Regarding the memory - 512M is a must

maybe this is a used machine rather than new?

either that or a misprint.... (maybe should be 2400).... cos I looked at some online shop and the _worst_ complete system they had was a 2400 which cost about 800 euros.

in my opinion 1400 with 256MB ram is not enough. I have Athlon 2000 with 512MB and it works, but I am about to buy another 512MB because I am constantly using virtual memory when working with large sample-based instruments...

also my CPU is ok but I would rather have 10x the speed at least. I know that is a ridiculous thing to say, but the point is : get as fast a machine as you can afford because you _certainly_ will use all the power!

I am often shouting at the screen 'come on you bastard what the hell are you doing???' when cubase freezes for a while because Ive pushed the CPU load too high.... this is not good music production technique.

> it's depends how u work

This is true. The thing is that when you get a faster machine, suddenly you find in many cases you can work in a new and better way.

One way of working (with slow machine) is :

write a synth line, export it to audio. Apply eq/comp etc, export to audio. Apply cool snazzy FX, export to audio. Apply reverb, export to audio. Realize that the cool FX was wrong, so reload old version of the file, or unmute the old version of the audio which you muted, then redo the FX then redo the reverb.... etc etc etc

this is ok but sloooow and makes you shout at the computer. Much better to have a faster machine so that you can leave some of the plugins in place without having to export to audio....

Especially in mixing.... it is a NIGHTMARE (shouting intended!!) to have to export parts with EQ applied because mixing is not a 'serial' operation : I mean you eq synth line A, then synth line B, then suddenly you need to tweak A again because of the changes to B....
etc etc...

with an Athlon 2000+ I am usually able to keep things under control if I am constantly watching the CPU meter and dont use too many expensive reverbs.... but it is a close thing.... and I wish I could use more of those expensive reverbs without exporting....

sorry for going on....
