Hi,there is something i m really not sure, when writing/mixing the track sould i aim to get the same dynamic as a good mastered track? or the best is to not compress to much and let the mastering enginner do it?
i would like to know if the aim of the mixing stage is to not need mastering at all too |

i like to compress tracks & groups before the mixdown.
the aim is whatever you decide is good for you
either way you should aim to make the mix as good as you can, if you can than make it sound like mastered track |

well i wouldnt do it as "mastered" since the terminology of good mastering changes with time.
make it to sound great , get as close to 0db for minimum noise and maximum headroom .
re-master happenz today , and will happen on todays music in 2050.
the real problem with shachar's advice is that today over-compression seems to have lots of popularity , peaple mistake rms for quality ... dont fall for this... also its hard to go back from over compressed mix .
i tend to have some elements over compressed and some not compressed at all , but overall finish track with -16db rms pritty much evry time.
let the peaple use their VOLUME knob .

you have to know what you are doing unless i wouldnt recomend to compress much
but i noticed that as the time passes i use lower treshold setting (-40db to -15db) and lower ratios (1:1.1 - 1:3.5)
please dont take those numbers too seriuosly, offcourse every part needs different setting
overall rms is around -15db but after the master it goes up to around -9db |

"overall rms is around -15db but after the master it goes up to around -9db"
even the kick sounds ?
i thought after mastered..peak from kick would be the top from the dbs.... around -2 -1 dbs. |

i would guess -3db , tho it compress with other elemnts on the mastering process.
usualy i place my kick peak around -7db or -9 db then adjust all by that... and with that i never get to clips or too low mix.
my guess after squash it with maximaizer and compressor that it gets +5db rms www.sattelbattle.com

+ 5 db rms ? really ? weirdo... would it be the WHOLE song after it s mastered ?
puting some trance tunes to analyse on spectrum analizer... usually the peak from the sound is around -1 db , 0 db..and coming from the kick ( around 60 - 80 hz ). Can u explain that ? (doubt )

I don´t over compress so much, but I tend to have this kind of balance with "compress and not compress elements".
My thought is that it´s all about a good balanced mix...
I will give a example from my experience...
I made a track, and sent it to a friend of mine to master it (very known artist and mastering engineer at psy scene). My main ask was: I want good RMS level, without that annoying "compress effect".
So he made it, the RMS was exactly what I wanted(-10 db). But then he said to me: "If u want, I can raise more the RMS without the compress effect, but in fact your track lacks of 40-250 Hz, and has too much high freq. I would suggest u to fix it at mix stage." Just for the info, he use very good gear(like TC Finalizer) and he also used a Manley compressor to add some warmth.
Another example is maybe one of my best sounding track at my live. It´s a pretty simple track, like 30 chanells, and the RMS is about -13 Db. And I can say that the track sounds VERY LOUD at my gigs. And the master was made by myself, with the overused Waves plugins(wich I quit after Ido´s tip about Cubase limiting).
So, the bottom line: a very well balanced mix with OK master will sound much better than an OK mix with killer master.
About the compression itself: too much of it without right settings will KILL your low freq. Maybe that´s the worst scenario for too much compression, wich I can hear in a lot of psy trance tunes from not pro artists(even great tunes, but with poor production).
