wht structure of kicks or drums should i use in 4/4 to make a buildup and what effect vst should i use to speed up the kick in quick succession? |

A good start would be to listen to other artists and how they have made buildups. I don't think you need an effect VST to speed up a kick, just program it in your sequencer. If you're after a Psykovski-like extreme speedup, you might get the job done by playing with the tempo track, and maybe exporting the result as audio. |

don't forget the power of taking elements away.
If you can sneak out your tambs or hihats or claps (etc etc) a little bit before the build up, it will start the tension earlier, giving you more room to build it up big.
When something drops out the listener goes "wait... what changed? did something change? is something about to happen?" Maybe not consciously, but subconsciously.
It's just another way to create tension.

Also you can use some other tricks to add to your build up... For instance:
If you have a big snare sound, you can add a reverb with a long tail to it. Bounce that sound with the reverb on it to wav, and take it into the audio editor of your choice.... I like to reverse the sample and do a nice little pitch bend to it to give it that much more of a sense of urgency.
