I don't advice you a nordlead 2 ! I'd go for something more modern. like omnisphere or nord waves (which is not within your budget).
You can get a powercore compact on ebay second hand and get a virus powercore and a vss3 reverb thats a smart buy. you'll get a super configurable high quality reverb plugin with an access virus b. You can get that for less than you budget.
The virus snow is also a good deal I think, but you can probably get a ti desktop second hand for around the same price. its not as pretty and portable but you'd have more knob and more dsp.

Virus snow better than virus desktop A/B/C
Powercore and UAD Expander are obsolete. UAD-2 is now the thing to go for.
Always keep in mind that for each output of any external synth you "should" have an input on your soundcard if you plan to use it fully and don't want to record every part you make all the time.
Virus Snow gives you three stereo channels via USB plus 4 via your interface. so you can mix down 5 stereo virus parts in your sequenzer, (or 3 stereo and 4 mono.)
As for the sound... listen to them. its a matter of taste. virus has a harsh sound. not good for subtle things.

Why you said Powercore and UAD Expander are obsolete? UAD-2 is not for laptop computers
With powercore compact i can have the Sonnox Oxford EQ that i heard is one of the best.
i heard that uad Expander is best than de powercore compact
is this true?
How many plug-ins can i have active?
Which have better plug ins?

uhmmm! with all due respect the powercore is not oboslete.
I certainly hope you're not buying the dsp cards because of how recent they are. Cause I can't quite see the uad running the vss3 reverb, or the virus or the md3 matering suite,
The powercore can handle without problem more instances of those plugs than you need, where in the case of the virus you only need 1 to have a fully working virus b.
Quality and flexibilty thats what you get with a powercore.
Its not a ti but its certainly more flexibable than a real b or c and definitely more flexible than a nord 2.
Uad does not sell must have gear in my opinion although its very good stuff and I like it. I prefer to go for the best bread and butter. In our case synths, eq, dynamics, reverb First.
With the powercore you get the best plugin reverb there is and a perfect recreation of one historic piece of gear in the dance music wolrd. Not bad! SO again I don't see the powercore being outdated so far.

I think you already have everything you need to make some great music. If I had that money I would prob. take a vocation instead.
But, if you are after a virus you are better of getting a used TI desktop instead of Snow. With snow you only get 4 parts instead of 16, and like 4 knobs to tweak. Whats the point of it? you can just assign those 4 knobs to a midi controler.
I'd rather get the virus powercore then snow. |

A matter of taste, but my labpartner has a couple of uad cards, powercore never crashes, can't say the same for uad.
In terms of quality i prefer powercore and the virus u can get for it is simply amazing.
399 dollars for the powercore on ebay and u can still get a virus in your budget+ more if u are going for the whole budget. |

I call UAD-1 and powercore obsolete not because of its soundquality, but because of the gain in processing power.
The additional Power for plugins given from UAD-1 and Powercore is only very little compared to todays CPUs.
Better get the native version of sonnox oxford.
As for UAD-2 it is or will be available very soon as an expander for laptops. It's already featured on the package of the UAD-2 PCI.
