Same here. People glorify The US, but forget that it's a good place to be rich and fortunate. When you're not, well... it can be deadly.

I think the number is something like 15% of Americans can not afford health coverage. That extends from below the poverty line into the middle-class. The average healthcare policy cost for a family doubled between 2000 and 2008. If I remember correctly, something like $6,000 average to $12,000 average. I'll have to post back with citations. Costs have only gone up in the last three years for families to get by. I'm a sole proprietor, relatively young, in good health, no children. I'm very thankful that I can be included in my wife's health insurance. I could afford what I was quoted to cover myself, but it would have had a moderate financial impact on the household income. That said, insurance companies have been raising rates while decreasing coverage. The most recent changes to my wife's health coverage require a lot more out of pocket for any visits or prescriptions, but it's coverage and if something catastrophic happened it would be a life saver. (Hopefully literally)

also I'm kind of offended that this thread didn't even make it past page 1. do people on this board really just not give a shit? i'm especially thinking about all the artists and labels we've got here who are constantly showing up to sell their product, glorify themselves, and bicker with others; they don't even have a thought in their mind to bump this thread to the top of the forum and maximize exposure for someone who ACTUALLY needs our attention.

I posted the original link to Cheb-I's story on my Facebook page and got 2 'Likes' and four comments. The same day a post about toilet seats got 100 'Likes' and 63 comments.

I was a bit disappointed by this and then it occurred to me that maybe there's not much to say once you know the story. The fact they reached their appeal target in days rather than the months they originally projected tells me that people care more than the number of posts would suggest.

A long thread on Isratrance wouldn't help Cheb-I any and would probably degenerate into an argument about file sharing by page four.

hey vector - if you care then donating $ and services to make $ is probably the best. it is great how much support there has been around the world.

i'm not sure if having visibility on isratrance is really the key now - the initial campaign was well run and met with a great response and people who supported may well choose to do so again.

Been six weeks with no updates. Here's hoping he'll update soon with something positive.

Dear Friends and Loved Ones,

It was nearly 5 months ago when doctors advised me that I had stomach cancer and less than four weeks to live. They were wrong in part of their diagnosis. My doctors did not take into account the power of prayers and the power of love from the thousands of my friends, fans and family. It is because of your love, your prayers and your generosity that I am still alive today.

After nearly three months of intensive and sometimes painful treatment in Germany the cancer seems to be under control. However there remains the possibility that the cancer may return and as such I am continuing to receive treatment, both traditional and holistic – alternative here in San Francisco. If all goes well, I may spend the winter months in India to continue receiving cost effective alternative treatments while staying close to friends and families.

You all donated nearly $75,000 to fund my medical treatment. Live fundraising concerts were held to raise additional monies. In a month, with the help of my record label Six Degrees Records, we will be releasing a downloadable compilation that features original, new, never published tracks from artist friends such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Natacha Atlas, Karsh Kale, Nitin Sawhney, The Midival Punditz, Kailash Kher, Azam Ali, Simon Shaheen, Cheb Mami, Amina, Mercan Dede, Vieux Farka Toure, Transglobal Underground. All proceeds from this compilation shall be donated to fund my continued medical treatment.

For those of you who would like to donate through PayPal, you may do so to my email address: chebisabbah@chebisabbah.com

I don’t think I can adequately express my thanks and love to you all. I lived long enough to come back to my home and favorite city: San Francisco. I lived long enough to see the birth of my granddaughter, Rachel and with your continued love, prayers and support I will live long enough to share new music with you and to see you all on the dancefloor.

I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Love & Light

This is absolutely awesome. Made my day to see how quickly the donations came in, and that the target was reached. Donating now.

There's an event in San Francisco to help with the ongoing treatment costs.

Chebi is playing, which is already a positive sign!
