Hi everyone,
Our friend and great musician, Cheb I Sabbah, needs the help of all those who enjoyed his music to try and save his life. Help if you want and can and spread the message.
Thanks.

Go here: http://www.indiegogo.com/Cheb-I-Sabbah-Cancer-Treatment-Fund

From the website:

Musical pioneer Cheb i Sabbah was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer. He was advised that the cancer was spreading to his liver and left lung and that time was not on his side. Like many Americans, “Chebiji” - as he is affectionately known – does not have health insurance. Due to his weak health condition, Chebiji found himself having to cancel live shows, meaning his income stream has come to a complete halt, with mounting medical bills and future medical costs ahead.

Upon learning of his condition, a few close friends and artists have come together to rally around Chebiji and assist him with his fight. Devastated by the news and outraged that an artist of Chebiji’s caliber cannot afford to care for himself and receive the proper urgent medical treatment needed, we have set up a fund to help.

THE IMPACT

Sabbah’s influence on the global electronic music and DJ scene cannot be over estimated. He has shown two entire generations that classical world traditions can blend beautifully and respectfully with DJ Culture. Thousands have experienced his music and artistic vision through his many albums and on his dance floors – whether in Goa, Essaouira, Moscow or at Nickie’s, where he ran an eighteen year San Francisco weekly residence, we know what a beautiful gift Chebiji has been to the world at large. This is our opportunity to give something back to Cheb i Sabbah in his time of need

WHAT WE NEED

We have identified a cancer clinic in Germany that is ideally suited for Chebiji’s condition and age. We estimate a treatment and recovery period of one year during which time Chebiji will be unable to work. Our projected costs for his treatment and household expenses during the treatment and recovery period is $45,000. We hope to raise $20,000 through private donations, benefit shows and benefit albums/remix albums. We turn to you, the friends and fans to help us raise another $25,000. The breakdown of monies needed is as follows:

1. Cancer Treatment inclusive of airfare and lodging: $27,000

2. One Year of Fixed Expenses (Rent/Storage/Electric ): $18,000

HOW ELSE YOU CAN HELP

We ask all of Chebij’s friends and fans to help spread the word about his condition via all social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook).

Donated and shared. I wish the best for him and hope he beats this cancer. It's great that he has a chance thanks to his fans giving back to him. The initial goal of $25K is already at $18K.

56 days left and the $25K goal for money for treatment has been reached! Here's hoping that the donations keep coming so that the money he'll need for rent, food, etc. is covered as well. Then he can just devote his energies to overcoming this and healing.

really glad that it wasn't even an issue for fans to pool together enough money for him to be able to put up a fight against cancer. By being a great musician, he didn't need insurance...if people like someone's music enough they will happily fork out the $$ for medical expenses necessary to keep the guy alive merely to please their ears. yay karma

A bit more related to the article, I'm having a hard time processing what this really means:

Quote:

People struggle to label his music. Indian classical with dance rhythms? Is that trans-global? Trance-global? Cheb i Sabbah told me he didn’t care what you called it as long as you don’t call it “world music”. “I have my own personal, philosophical jihad against world beat” he said with a chuckle. “World beat — that’s just gross.”

World music has the connotation of a thieving magpie, jet setting around the world, picking up music from here and there and mixing it together in New York.

“You can’t just take, you have to give,” he said.

Particularly, I'm not sure what he means by this last statement. How does a fusion artist walk that line? how can fusion artists do more giving? Can we articulate the difference between shameless thievery and paying homage?           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

He was just shooting the shit in an interview. And he was probably edited down to a couple of concise statements. You'd need to read the full transcript to know what he actually said.

I've read interviews I've given where the person who edited the transcript managed, probably innocently, to make it sound like I said the opposite of what I meant.

It's when I read stuff like that I feel grateful to live under the umbrella of Britain's universal health care system. I can't imagine what it must feel like to be told, at such an earth-shattering time in your life, that you're ineligible to receive treatment.

To people who have grown up in Britain that is mind-boggling.

Donated, spread the word and wishing him all the best.

Vector, I think what Chebi was trying to say is that he is not too fond of the concept of taking a beat and putting some samples from other parts of the world they yours (meaning non-western) and calling it world music.

He went to the people who played the music, they were made part of the project. I sat with him in the studio when he and Gaurav just finished the work on La Kahena and had the pleasure of listening to the music and hearing the stories of the people who took part and how it was all recorded in Morocco. His music is so full of respect to the music of the world and he invested everything he had to make it like this.

Same here. People glorify The US, but forget that it's a good place to be rich and fortunate. When you're not, well... it can be deadly.           ---------------------------------------------

Update from the donation mailing list:

With your blessings, prayers and generosity, I am currently in Germany at a clinic nicely situated in a small town that’s famous for it’s sulfur baths and countryside.
I have begun a battery of tests and some treatments. I am feeling good and full of hope, and this is all due to your love. For that I will always be ever grateful.
Blessings,
Cheb i Sabbah

Hi, I have no money to send, because I am poor these days, but I would like to contribute, maybe an ambient VA could be made, which is then put up for sale, one would have to let the buyer know that this is for a good cause, to save someones life. All the proceedings would go to this mailing donation list... I don't know if such a thing makes sense or is even possible, but I would definitely contribute to it !

Lastly I wish you good healing and a speedy recovery man !

so glad he got the money needed for treatment; i'm thinking about this guy every day, really hoping he makes it through alive.

also I'm kind of offended that this thread didn't even make it past page 1. do people on this board really just not give a shit? i'm especially thinking about all the artists and labels we've got here who are constantly showing up to sell their product, glorify themselves, and bicker with others; they don't even have a thought in their mind to bump this thread to the top of the forum and maximize exposure for someone who ACTUALLY needs our attention.           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

There are still more than 30 days left and the fund is up to $70K! No updates from the man himself though. I hope his treatments are having a positive impact.
