So I'm looking for the cheapest and most DIY-able way to treat this room a bit so I can get more of an accurate idea of my mix and worry less about how it'll sound on a proper rig.
I'm using Samson Resolve65A monitors which are both pretty close to the wall and about a foot below a shelving unit (one monitor is in a corner which I know is not ideal at all).
To my left is a black blind covering most of my wall.
Behind my mix position is large shelf and cupboard unit and a TV which is blanketed when not in use
Any help on improving the response in my room on a student's budget is really welcome.

From my mix position. the room is about 3.10M wide, 3.30M long and 2.70M tall although the ceiling is slanted.
Where would be the best place to place absorptive material? Does the shelf behind me help break up reflections at all?
I'll be grateful for any advice you guys might have for improving things even just a bit.

I would put on that wall in front of you all the way, above your monitors on that shell, i see that you have it on left side wall and for back in every corner.

i would recommend you to place your monitors at least 50cm away from the wall...should improve your bass response at least a bit.
furthermore you can build some basstraps by yourself, there is plenty of tutorials if you just google for it.
put as much material in the corners to improve the bass.
to get the early reflections under control build some absorber panels and place them on the walls.
there is a trick that works quite good to find out where to place them:
ask a friend to walk along the wall with a mirror, while you sit on your monitoring position. if you see your monitors in the mirror, you can place an absorber at that position.
the bookshelf might not work as an absorber, but more as some kind of diffusor, what isnt bad either.
hope this helped a bit...^^

For your room ideal sitting position would be at 1.25m from front wall ( that is 38% of room ) so from there you can calculate 60 deg triangle position for your monitors to be placed.
