AMG (advanced midi gate)
dbglitch programmed with gating
Lots of volume automation!
Sidechain with prefader on a silent track
or, bounce and cut

loads of options and I think they're all free.

im with tomos :
4 ways , each sound good on its own way , and sometime getting similar results...

midi gate (i like fruity peak controler then i use percussion to triger the pad volume)
sidechain (to percussion kick or vocal , pumps the pad great)
audio edit (bounce chop chop)
volume automation (simple lfo , or complicated lfo , or manual recording)
