My friend is opening a music store, and he's gonna have music studio lessons taught there.
He had some 'studio guy' tell him that the way to go is to get this crazy expensive 20,000 pro-tools setup, and he's actually considering it. I've never used pro-tools, and from what I know, there's no reason to go with pro-tools. I need some help explaining to him why or why not to go with this setup, so please help.
This is what he was looking to buy -

Better go with Nuendo and some nice Euphonix controlers
More stable and less money..so your friend can spend some more money on other stuff

Ok.. I have a little experience with pro tools and C24...
It is good if you will be doing a lot of live instruments recording... the downside is that it has poor midi programmability..
C24 is fine.. but it can only be used with pro tools..
If live instruments recording is what he will be doing.. pro tools are fine..
If he wants more all around studio so he can do both live instruments and midi programming I've would second Euphonix instead of C24, you can use it with anything.. Cubase/Nuendo, Logic, Pro Tools.. I have used MC Mix a little ( not in depth ) and it seems fine..
I would get MC Control, 2 or 3 MC Mixes, Logic or Cubase/Nuendo, audio interface with a lot of I/O, preamps and some good plugins or even some outboard.. |

Well, it depends what you do with it.
Sound editing? Composing? Mixing?.........
As far as stability is concerned, Pro Toold HD with a c24 is in my experience rock solid, unlike pro tools le...
The c24 is a very nice digital mixer that I truly enjoyed and had lots of fun with...
I love how you can flip plugins to faders and all kinds of other crazy stuff. It is expensive. And it IS Industry Standard.
I found the panning options to be limited however.
Psysyntax is correct that midi in PT is rather limited, even though they have done a lot in that department. You can always use rewire with e.g. FL Studio which should help you with all your midi needs...
I would like to know what would be the mic preamps?
He should also try to get Revibe instead of Space TL
(the best reverb I have ever worked with)
and I think it is a bit shabby that they don't even throw in a sync I/O, and it would be interesting to know if they throw in the cables, they are expensive too.

You know you can rewire Logic into Pro Tools right?
Pro Tools audio capabilities and Logic's midi/enviroment.
Best of both worlds.
Peace out.

I also like Logic the most..
Yeah you can rewire.. if you plan to teach there, you should get all DAWs ( Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo and maybe Ableton too ), since those are that people use the most and you will find them in pretty much all studios out there..
..and you would want to be able to control them all.. you cant do that with C-24.. but it has vegas mode to impress your clients
C24 is not digital mixer, it is Pro Tools controller with built-in preamps and monitoring section.. all the rest you can do with much cheaper controller.. except flips I recon.. )

if you like to work with proll tools, there is no need for the hd version imao. combine proll tools 9 with uad and you got a pretty nice setup covering all your needs at a piece of costs for a hd system.
hd anyways is pretty cool love it for cutting works, recordings, mixing, mastering. but the price is way too far....
one should be fine with the solution above. hd just delivers even more dsp power freeing your cpu from calculating processes and few more candys just not worth the money....

The structure problem looks like it is an ilok issue, there is a difference between hd and le systems, if you want to edit sound, pro tools is the best out there, hd that is... It really depends what you use it for. I very much enjoyed mixing also with the c24, it is very nice to have it all at your fingertips, and it really depends what you want to teach with it.
C24 is rox man!
