Hay all
Im hoping somebody or a lot of you might take the kik and bass loop that iv'e posted and get it sounding how you think it should, then post it back telling me exactly what you did to it in detail- eq and compression etc. It would be much apprieciated and also intresting to see what people do to the same sounds to get it what they consider is sounding correct.
bass loop is 150 bpm
cheers |

wait - this is one loop (1 bar bass) and one kick sample... in separate files?
i know where you're going wrong!
if i load both up into a new project, i would say: the kick's tail is causing some clicks, it has a lot of high-frequency energy and maybe not enough 'thud' down low. bass is cool, but it needs some careful EQing in my opinion to take out some of the boxiness and 'fullness' within the lower-mid range.

ok man, i am at work now... if i get time this evening i will try and do it
in the meantime, some things to consider if you haven't already:
- take a one-bar loop from a tune you like which has a similar kick/bass pattern, put it in a new audio channel, then A/B it with your one to listen to the differences. some of it will be mastering etc. but it will help you to get an idea of what needs doing. you can use a spectral analyser as well to see the differences.
- notch EQing can be very useful if you're not sure what to do. take a precision EQ, and make a very narrow peak band. turn your monitors down, push the gain right up to max, and slowly sweep the peak throughout the whole frequency range. you will hear that at certain points it gets very loud - at the fundamental and at various intervals above and below. when you find a frequency that really 'honks' or squeals or is considerably louder, reduce the gain until you are cutting that frequency. then repeat the process. be careful with this method as overuse can steal the important intervals from the waveform, but with gentle use you can clean up the bass and give it more punch.
i should also mention that i only listened on headphones this morning (our neighbours have a little baby ) and so i might be talking shit!

my advice:
1) The phase of your bass is not restarting on every note, so it is unsteady. Either use samples, or use a synth which will reset on every note. Basically, this bass is unusable because of this, however, I've still tried to get it into the right EQ shape, even though cliclicks and pops because fo this problem make it sound like the kick is doing something odd.
2) Both your samples have too much mid, and not enough tops.
I also feel that the uppers are over excited by the sweep down - possibly to much res? It has been very difficult to tame this area, and wouldn't say I'm happy with this result 100% - In fact, I'm not sure I can fix it at this stage.
So bass EQ.
broad strokes - getting basic sound better in spectrum

preliminary correction
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/slot2.gif
bass inharmonics
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/slot3.gif
Low mid inharmonics, plus start of mid corrections
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/slot4.gif
trying to remove glassyness - partially successful
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/slot5.gif
Inharmonic mid reduction, high bass control and futher glassyness reduction
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/slot6.gif
attempt to reduce dynamic range of mids, and so alleviate problems with filter resonance.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/slot7.gif
reseat bass with uppers, final touches to smooth slope
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/slot8.gif
There is more I'd like to do, but... out of slots! This needs resynthesising - open the filter more, cut down on resonance, stop the notes overlapping, and either use samples or make the phase retrigger on each note.
kick:
just trying to even it out a bit:

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/kick2.gif
group comp
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/Charasmatix/comp.gif
hardly needs anything.

just remember, if you get the souond nearer what you need in the first place, by setting up the filter better, ie higher, and with less res (or however it was that the mids ended up being really rezzy), a lot of what I did there wouldn't be needed I was FORCED to brutalise it.

I havn't listened yet but...
38 EQ points! PSYKOTIK MINDZ, you need to tweak your synth better. Any bass line that needs more than a single (multiband) EQ needs fixing in the synthesis, not the EQ.
