When do i need to use filters either in series or paralell? The only need i se(speaking from a noob perspective) is to have a bandpass filter which u can adjust the q setting to your liking. Ive tried to make some sounds using two, but ive yet to find proper use

There is no simple answer to this. It's like asking is C major a good scale?
It's all about what u send to the filters and the end result u want.(IMO)

the easiest way to understand how something is useful in synthesis, at least to me....

is to use it.

Try some shit! Throw in 2 bandpass, or a highpass to remove bass then a bandpass sliding through the rest, or use one filter that gives character and another that accentuates that character

the sky is the limit!

You seem to have this conception that there is a 'proper' and 'improper' use - in my opinion there is no proper in psychadelic music, all that matters in the end is that it sounds cool!            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

for leads most of my patchs are using only 1 fitler , i use a second one but i just use it like a eq to get cleaner sound and to make the leads fit better in the mix but a eq filter could replace that... i m sure there is lot of creative use for the second filter but dont use it much on leads or even the other sounds..gonna try some ideas mentioned there

I can't quite explain it... the best thing (imo) is to experiment.

Basement Arts Frantic

it makes serial and parallel filtering.. and change from one filter type into another.
one of my favourites, unfortunally not availabe anymore

I always use high-pass filter on sends/returns, to help keep the mix tidy. This is especially useful for reverb. I find it's good for distortion too, so you can add some crunch to your mids on your bass track.
You can use a number of modulating filters in series for creative effect, you can get some strange squelching sounds. Try it with your leads. Works nicely with big wide patches, like the gold old reece.
Tip - experiment with a few different filter types being used together on an insert.

On most leads and FX that sound good with it, I use a bell shape to do stuff you can usually do with bandpass and a lowcut to remove sub freq. in some parts of the song.

On bass sometimes I use a lowcut and a hicut for the sub freq.

If you use a band-pass and a high-pass on snares and high hats (serial) you can bring out some cool frequencies which essentially could turn one high hat sound into a completely different high hat sound.

A Delay with two filters (such as FabFilter Timeless) can mean that only the sounds of the delay are filtered, thus you can squeeze out the extreme upper and lower ends of the sound which puts it in the "background" compared to the original (also good on high hats).

Bass can have a low pass filter on it a lot of the times... if you then put a high pass filter on it you can make a nice bass fade-in/out from "above". (Try routing the kick and bass into one channel, then try this on the output of that channel for further yumminess.)

If you have a serial low pass filter and high pass filter, at their maximums (so nothing is actually being filtered) you can modulate the cutoffs towards each other while turning both resonances up to make a cool fade-out (add a delay on the end of that for more fun).

You can learn a lot by studying cosmosis albino patches..

Mostly it depends on if you are using the filter pair in serial or parallel.

In parallel you are actually splitting the signal into two and then mixing them post filter..it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how both change the sound in parallel..

In serial though there isn't much point in using hp/hp, lp/lp, bp/lp and hp/lp because the first filter will be filter out so much there won't be so much left for the second filter..

Also keep in mind that a 2 pole serial lp/hp is basically a 4 pole band pass.

I would stick with messing around with
parrallel whatever but especially bp/bp because you can get kind of formants going.

In serial stick with 2 pole lp/hp (much different than hp/lp) until you get a feel for how things work.           http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_in_a_vat
