.; cpu

my suggestion at the moment: go for a high clocked core duo extreme from intel or wait till quadcores are affordable

.: ram

2 x 1 gigabyte ddr2 ram from any good brand (best 2 matched ones, read the timings)

.; mobo

asus got nice mainboards with lots of features. see that your core duo extreme fits.

.: cpu fan

go for a quiet one, zalmann is very b.i.g. and silent

.; hd

I use sata2 drives, you can build a raid with 2 physical drives on almost any mainboard nowadays.

.: pci express graphic card

you can get a cheap one, as there's no serious 3d rendering involved in any sequencer so far.
looking at it from the other side it could be nice to have 2xDVI for large tft panels. But that you only get with selected cards of ati or nvidia...

.; psu

you need juice... get a good low noise power unit. Antec, Bequiet, lots of other brands. check the v12 rail for enough voltage and be sure to get one above 400W ...

hope that helps

or get a mac           soundcloud.com/epsylohm

I generally agree in everything with sideFXed.

The Quad core option definitely looks very promising but they are still very expensive. All today's DAW's are supposed to be able to work with as many cores you throw them. That's very nice but is it actually true? So, the question here is, where can we find a test regarding the speed and efficiency of today's processors for music production systems? A test that uses Cubase for example, as it is the most widely used platform. I'd be willing to invest in a killer cpu but only if i knew that the power i get is 100% usable.

To get back to the topic, you can always get an Intel Core 2 Duo with a mobo that supports quad core cpu's and later you upgrade.

Another thing i'd suggest that you should consider is using 2 monitors. I'm using three 20" screens and it's by far the best investment i've ever made, and i had to cut from other components in order to be in my initial budget.
