I would like some suggestions on setting up my "studio". I will be setting it up in my bedroom (as labeled in the pictures) and wanted to know the best place to put my desk and monitors. I would also like some suggestions on what I should do for sound proofing. As you can see, I have a window and closet in my bedroom, but it is still better than my living room, so these are my 2 biggest obstacles.

Here is my flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24849956@N06/?saved=1 (pictures bedroom 1-4 are what I have to work with and living room 1 & 2 are where I just have my stuff set up at the moment).

Thanks a bunch and feel free to make fun of anything I have

2 cents:

If there's a window in whatever room you decide to use, don't use the wall that it's in as your front or back wall. I don't know how to explain this scientifically and have no idea why it happens, but from my experience the glass reflects bass differently. I would do the same when working with a closet in the room, but I've never had one in the studio, so I have no idea.

Unless you NEED to sound proof a room (living with roomates, easily annoyed neighbors, etc.) don't do it...at least in the "scrap carpet" sense..just focus on actual bass trap and diffusion foam placement.

You aren't going to want your monitors too close to the wall (I suggest at least 6-8 inches from it)..if they're too close you'll hear a lot of bass reflection and you won't hear your mix accurately unless you're in the middle of the room.

If it's possible, I would actually just pick a song that you've heard hundreds of times, have heard on several systems, and know in and out, hook up a cd player to your monitors and play it in every room to test it out acoustically.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

1) If the room is rectangular then you should put your setup on the length not the width.

2) Your listening position should be at 1/3 of the lengh in the room.

3) You should be able to draw an equilateral triangle between your 2 speakers and your listening position.

4) Do not mount your monitors on the wall. in fact the further away from the wall the better as long as 2 and 3 are respected

5) Keep thing symmetrical in the room, try to balance things in the room so both the left side and the right side of the room have similar content in shape and material.

6) If you have a single window you better have it behind or in front of you so you keep the room symmetrical... as long as is not gonna go against rule 1.

Now if you follow these simple rules then you probably have avoided lots of potential acoustic problems.

if you know the sound of your room then you should be able to get pretty good result while mixing if you know what your doing.

If you really want a good acoustic the rest can be managed with acoustic traps for high mid and lows. which you can make out of rockwool.

Thanks for the tips. I've got a pretty good idea of how I want to set it up now.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

good tips given here already, but it would be much easier to help you more precisely if you'd just upload an exact plan of your room than pictures           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Ah that'd probably be a bit easier to visualize eh. I'll throw something together like that later today.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
