its not the cubase...most beginner have this problem..its issue of the mix & quality of track..if the mix is good you can add alot of level to the track without hurting the sound much.

to extract you mean to bounce/export ? from what software ? to what device ? try raising all the track faders in the same amount and leaving the master on 0dB.           YEEEEES!

Or just raise the master fader - this is identical (if you're not using separate physical outputs).           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Gain structure.
maybe the trim pot on your master fader is down?

Colin, I think it's the same thing (in the digital domain) but(!) if you had peaks generating from combination of sounds during the project (ones that did not make the single track clip but got the master fader near 0dB, it might make it clip now. Basically, I think it's not very healthy to amplify at the master fader stage, good mix should be close to 0dB but with enough headroom for the mastering engineer to do his stuff (prob around -6dB).           YEEEEES!

It's virtually impossible to make the master fader clip in SX due to it's 32-bit floating-point signal path. Clipping WILL occur on red lights when the 32-bit audio is truncated to 16 or 24 bits for playback, ie. Cubase won't clip but your soundcard will. Whichever method you use to eliminate overs (or increase the overall volume of the mix) before the audio gets to your soundcard, there will be no difference in the output signal.

Hmmmm.
Good point.
Still wouldn't touch the master fader for amplification purposes, I'd rather do it from the track faders (maybe I'm just an inflexible ba***rd because I'm coming from analogue consoles but I think it's a good practice to leave the master on 0dB).           YEEEEES!

I'm the same... worked my way up to digital from pause-button editing on cassette via 4, 8, 16 and 24-track tape. In terms of control I'd agree that having the master fader at or near (say within +-6dB) of 0dB is preferable as it's here that the resolution of the fader is highest, giving greatest control; it also forces you to set up individual channel levels such that the mix-buss is unlikely to go over 0dBFS. However no-one is perfect and if you example you realise you're mixing really quiet, it is so much easier to pull the master fader up by a couple of dB to get a decent hot level than it is to link all faders (a few times, until you're sure you've not included any MIDI or group or FX channels!), pull them up and unlink them... amplifying with the master fader may be a clumsy solution but it will absolutely not degrade sound quality.

Personally I mix partly on my soundcard (Yamaha DS2416) and I'm glad for the training in good practise given by the fact the DS2416 master fader has no travel above 0dB           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Colin.
Fair enough, what you're saying is technically right.
All the rest is about your working habits.

As long as it sounds good........
