I am about to build a new pc, and will appreciate all the advice and suggestions you can give me. A fast and stable pc to run with cubase is what I am looking for. I think a dual core e6600 or e6700 should be fast enough, and a mother board that would leave room for a quad core expansion in the future. Since the motherboard is the basis for the setup, I would like more advise on it.

Seppa has suggested this setup a few months ago in another topic:

Heatsink Noctua NH-U12F the best and more silent heat sink on the market

This system have been tested and run through the most demanding audio task and sold. Its a minimal config non raid but its ok. I Always recommend raid but you're on a limited budget.
This motherboard does not have a raid controller. so if you want a serious raid youll need to get a seperate controller.(raid that come with motherboard are rubish anyway. you need the controller to have its own bus for truly speedy raid.

Don't go for for a processor under the 6600.... you loose too much power and save little.

The motherboard you see on top is the one that is the most stable, she's equiped with intel p965 chipset and ti firewire too.the mobo cost around £60 in the uk

The ram: buy this one trust me.

hd: get the 2 of them if you can, one for the system and other stuff not related to audio.
The second, the biggest for audio (project, sound bank ect....

If you can't get both, get the 250 samsung. nothing wrong with the seagate. but the samsung is very silent and has great performances. they cost about the same

The other component won't matter much for audio, just make sure you use new technologies not old stuff.

This system is not for overclock(mine flies), there is other stuff for that if you want more detail, let me know

Some suggestion for the sound card:

get a tc electronic: konnekt. they are very good and cheap for their quality. great converters.
If you feel like spending more and getting something for good get an rme 400.

And I agree wiht you save up for some good monitors.

Its all in there if you go through It, I mentioned which chip for the firewire..Ti

Can anyone say anything about the intel DP35DP motherboard?

For a graphics card i need something that will have dual monitor support, and will live up to the latest gaming demands.

well the p5w is a popular board, but runs on the 975x chipset which by now is pretty outdated (released in 2005)it's a decent mobo, but i'd rather get something with a newer chipset for greater future compatibility and stability.

After doing quite a bit of research I've narrowed it down to two boards: Asus Commando and eVGA 680i SLI.

The Asus Commando seems to be an excellent platform based on the 965 chipset and has lots of interesting features, like the lcd display which is not necessary but can be quite use useful, the only downside that i see is that if I ever want in future to run dual gpu, I have to opt for radeon crossfire, unfortunately currently they don't support dx10, and I pretty much have already decided on an 8800 gts 320 which seems to be best card in it's price range, and it would make a perfect combo with a 680i sli mobo (as Witch has suggested).

So I guess I am left with these two choices Assus Comando vs eVGA 680i SLI, any last advice?

Personaly I would go for the Assus Commando, but like I said the only thing that puts me off is the fact that it does not support SLI.

d00d, don't waste your time with Asus <----- this days there tech support very low + crap Bios will give ya tonnes of glitches and headakes, aslo they got problems with Ram controlers, so if u want to run more than 2GB of Ram u can forget it(i din't mentioned that high speed Ram like 1066+ they not support too.....as Evga do)!

Evga = quality and stability

what ram would would you suggest fits best for the eVGA board? i should go with sli ready ram right?

the ones I am considering now are:

Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB 2X1GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 Dual Channel Memory Kit
(has great reviews, plus cheapest of the bunch 120 CAD after mail in rebate)

then there is Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit

and of course the Corsair XMS2 Dominator TWIN2X2048-6400C4D 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Memory Kit

ok, here the deal....u need to decided would u do overclocking or not? as Evga boards sooooo nice and stable and it's first choice of experienced overclockers i suggest u will do! if it is so, than go for OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 / 1066MHz / NVIDIA® SLI™-Ready Edition if not than go for OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 / 1066MHz / NVIDIA® SLI™-Ready Edition ..it is very smooth memory, wichest give ya desired result! ...if it's too expencive than go slower speed ram wichest also would do the job, but hey why not to use this board on max? ..and enjoy da life ) (i tried aslo that super duper Dominator, but after 1 week had to sell it, cose it's goes sooo HOT and extra Dominator flow fan wichest i odered extra was making so much noises that my absolutely silent DAW was screaming of this 3 little fans) when u gona make your chose also check that http://evga.com/support/mbmem/ and yea....just in case this is the board we talking about ----> http://evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=122-CK-NF68-A1&family=20

Good Luck

I am not sure if I will overclock, i have no experience with it, although I do want to have the possibility to do so in the future. the 8500 nvidia sli edition ram is pretty expencive at 250$ qfor the same price I can get 4gigs of 6400 ram, is that a better option???

keep one important thing in the mind about 4GB of Ram...WinXP 32Bit do NOT support 4GB, u can add it ofcose, but your system will see only 2.1-2.8GB....if u will be on WinXP 64Bit than yesss 4GB is blow ya away even at 6400! same thing with Vista, wichest u DON't wana run on your DAW as it's SUX big time (at least in the next year)

so my suggestion is get 2GB of OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 / 1066MHz / NVIDIA® SLI™-Ready Edition and be happy

p.s. sad, but only Vista supports DirectX 10....in case u want to play upcoming Crysis ..so u would need to install bouth WinXP and Vista if u want to use DirectX 10 in future, so don't forget to get bigger hdd's

well it's on the way, should be receiving it sometime this week. so q6600 on an nforce 680i sli mobo, with 2gigs os ocz sli ram

Wich, I've read on one of the sites somewhere that the original bios setting of this mobo are no good, and that you should play around with them to get the best results, do you have any recomendations? the system will be ready for extreme overclock , but I don't want to do it just yet, i want to see how it runs at factory speeds.
